MG MGF Technical - Heater fan switch / resistor pack?

Hi,

For a while now (well about 3 years actually) the No 1 setting on the interior fan / heater switch has not worked. This was no big deal as I just used no 2 instead.

Now no 2 switch setting has stopped working as well so I need to do something about it (using no 3 setting is like a minor hurricane in the car).

Does anyone have experience of this - is it likely to be the switch or a resistor pack on the heater itself?

Neither the back of the switch or the heater seems easy to get to, so any advice would be appreciated before I pull the car apart.

Thanks

Is easy, is resistor pack, is in passanger footwell, is two screws, is available for about £10 from rover (who have computerized diagrams to show you where it is)

As Will says, its up inside the passenger footwell. Almost above the glove box, in the centre.

I just mended mine with some resistance wire (I'd only lost setting 1 at the time). Wound enough wire to give about 2 ohms.

The wire (from Maplin electronics) was thicker than MG's, so should last a bit longer...

Have a look at Dieter's site ( I'm sorry I have got the link at work). He has an excellent set of instructions and pictures.

Basically you need to remove the Glove box and side panel of the centre console on the passenger side. You will find the wiring to the resistor pack - two screws to remove. Dead easy once you have located it and the part is £12 inc VAT.

Good Luck

Part Number still missing.

Lots of stuff about it in the archives as well for related DIY.

Thanks guys, you have saved me a whole heap of hassle!

The part is now on order.

Its strange, the MGF has had absolutely nothing go wrong with it for at least 50,000 miles (I am now on 132000). On Sunday I went to have a look at a Lotus Esprit Turbo SE, before setting off the MG refused to start (had to WD40 to ignition) and on the way the light for the oil temp guage and the resistor pack in the heater gave up. Its almost as if the MG has gone into a sulk about me buying a Lotus.

I will have to "explain" that the Lotus is not a replacement for the MG, but for an Austin Healey I sold a month or so back....
