MG MGF Technical - Heater isnt hot!

Hello, quick question.

I started my journey this evening, shoved the heater on full, took a couple of minutes to warm up, toastie!!!
Couple of miles down the round suddenly cold air starts blasting out the vents! Now I cant get any warm air out of the vents, even though the car has been running for about 30 mins :(

Anyone have any ideas?

Edd :)
Edd

Sounds like there is no water in the system, have you checked?, Driving with no coolant will lead to HGF :o(
Mark.L

Ay! no water leads to no heating in the air vents! weird. will check first thing tommorow, theres no way im paying out for HGF again!

Cheers fella... :)
Edd

Not realy, Hot water from your engine heats up your heater matrix, your fan blows air over said hot matrix, presto warm air at your vents.
No water in engine, means no water in matrix, means no heater, means HGF, means lots of cash means..........................................................Sure you get the picture!.

Gotya cheers, always thought the heaters worked through some sort of heating element like a hair drier! silly me.
Edd

Right, checked this morning, water was a little low, put about half a litre back into the resevouir. Also checked for mayo just incase and none there.

So can i presume all is ok and the water just went down a little to far?
Edd

Air in the heater matrix is not necessarily going to mean you will get an HGF, it may mean that when the system was last drained and re-filled the heater dial was not turned fully to hot in which case the matrix would not fill. (Or the bleed nipple under the plastic cowl was not bled correctly)

However, if there is a leak in the system then air can enter and it is likely to collect at the highest point, the heater matrix, so although it will not necessarily cause an HGF it could be a symptom.

Tim

(remember that there are two type of HGF, an 'Innie' and an 'outie'. An outie will not show mayo on the dipstick and generally shoot water from above the alternator)

There a lot more ways of HGF!

Was the start of your journey very slow? if so then it's possible that you have a stuck thermostat (stuck open)
Will Munns

Oh blimey! Lucky im going to MGF Centre on Monday for a service, will ask them to do a quick check.:)

From own experiance with currently stuck open thermostat at my car.

Two to three miles from cold (+2°C) and you feel warm air coming from the heater vents.
60° Oiltemperature after app 4 miles. (MPI driving below 3000 revs)
