MG MGF Technical - Heater Problem

When driving home from work tonight I noticed that my heater would only blow warm air when the car was moving, as soon as I stoped at traffic lights cold air would start coming out.
Ant suggestions are appreciated.

O
check your coolant level which might be a bit low - the heater will not work properly if the coolant level is down. If it is investigate why because it may indicate a bigger problem.

Within 2 minutes of starting my car this morning the temp guage had risen to its usual working temp. The heater was still only working when the car was moving. Half way into work the temp guage started to rise, I turned the car off for 10mins and added some water to the coolent. The heaters atarted to work after that.
In May 2001 I had the dreaded HGF and don't remember the heater not working.
I'll get the booked into the garage on Saturday.
Hopefuly nothing to serious.

Granny sucking eggs time??

The correct coolant level is the seam halfway up the reservoir when cold (at least 2 hours since last used). Below that will cause overheating and probable heater problems. Above that will, in extremis, get pumped out of the overflow.

Dont know if it applies to all cars but I had a HGF in a Punto a few years ago and the heater stopped working and it was due to the HGF

Have you had the car serviced recently... and did they replace the coolant? When bleeding the coolant system the heater knob must be on HOT to allow coolant to drain and refill correctly, if this is not done then you can suffer an air lock in the heater matrix.

You may also want to check to see if there is any dampness under the passenger footwell carpet....

Sounds familiar. While I had all the attention for the heater knobs and finding out why the system wasn't heating properly... steam was escaping from the rear.

It was Ferbuary and freezing cold

my heater seems strange, its hot when turned right up but when set to even slightly cooler is seems to make up its own mind about what temperature it wants me to be! its a new car and i checked the coolant, any other ideas anyone?
