MG MGF Technical - Heating up
When my car starts in the morning, I drive one mile and hear an underfloor clunk which I put down to the water pipes reaching temperature. No probs....even after driving a few hundred miles later --- just an observation. Anybody else hear this. Should ? ask the garage to have a look ? My inclination is do nothing. Regards Bryan C |

Bryan I get exactly the same in mine. I just put it down to the pipes expanding very slightly perhaps against a retaining clip that causes this noise. Hope this is the case, but interested in others views. (2001 MPi) |

This has come up before and many of us (including me) get it. It is indeed thought to be the pipes expanding, as you say. It can be surprisingly, even worryingly (!) loud, usually happens only once per journey and not surprisingly happens regardless of speed or anything else. |

the pipes will heat up very fast, the water is heated to around 80 before the thermostat opens, then a hot rush of water into the pipes will take them up from, say 5 degress, to almost 80, straight away- no wonder they clunk! |

This sounds very simmilar to a noise from my '97 mpi. However, the clunk (sounds like the noise you get when a stone or somthing small hits the inside of the wheel arch) noise I get will last for about a minute, but sounds like it's coming from the engine and will also happen even if the car is warm, again only lasting about a minute. It hasn't become any worse since I noticed it about 6 months ago, so I've just ignored it. |

I have this very same problem! Has anyone resolved it conclusively? |
