MG MGF Technical - Heavy/Stiff Steering, worse when driving!

I hope someone can help as i'm running out of ideas. I have a 98-VVC which when parked the steering does'nt feel any different to another MGF with EPAS but when you pull away and start driving the steering goes heavy, (the sort of feel you'd expect if you had a siezed steering rack), which makes it a nightmare to drive especially at speed because the steering won't centralise by itself. By the way I must add that when I removed the EPAS fuse the steering does centralise at speed so it's the EPAS that's causing the concern. Was wondering if anyone has attempted making adjustments to the torque sensor on the column and would this help anyway? Any help would be appreciated.

Steve, what happens if you jack the front of the car - do the wheels steer to one side by themselves?
Rob Bell

Nope, they stay where you point them. Just some info for you Rob, i've disconnected the rack from the hubs and the hubs are free to turn, i've disconnected the rack from the column and the rack is ok and the column on it's own feels ok and not tight to turn. I've replaced columns in the past but for a bias in the assistance one way but this feels like your fighting against the assistance but only when driving. It's really strange and this is the other halfs car and you know what they're like, she does'nt like driving it at any speed above 50 but I don't blame her it's horrible keep in a straight line and it makes your forearms ache after a journey.

This doesn't sound quite like any of the "usual problems" Steve - so I am a little stumped. It kind of sounds as though the torque motors are opposing one another...?

There is a power steering specialist in Grenwich who may be able to help - and seeking professional advice could be the way forward here.

Yep, maybe you're right, just thought i'd have an ask on the forums cos you never know. I've found 'Power Steering Specialists' in Greenwich but their website does'nt say anything about EPAS systems, but i'll give them a call tomorrow see if they've any ideas.
Have you ever had any need to adjust the torque sensor on these Rob?
Steve T

Not personally, no Steve. Been fortunate in that the EPAS on my car has not given any problems (there, that's done it, famous last words!!! ROFL)

I have an email address for the guys at Greenwich - but I would think dropping them a phone call would be a better bet.
