MG MGF Technical - help!!!

Can someone tell me the tyre size for the front wheels on an mgf vvc that has the original 15" alloys???
Neil

By coincedence there is another thread on a similar subject on this board, the following information is lifted from there.

Original tyre fitment:

>> 185/55 R15 V Goodyear NCT3 fit to 6 x 15 alloy wheels - FRONT only <<

SF
Scarlet Fever

Standard are 185/55 Eagle NCT3, V speed rating.

185/55 R15s are the standard fitment, but you can also fit 195/50 R15 and 205/50 R15 as alternatives, depending on the tyre fitment you choose...

I have been told by a local dealer that only Goodyear NCT3 tyres should be fitted (185/55x15 front & 205/50x15 rear)and that Goodyear have now stopped producing them !!!

Don't know about NCT3s but Goodyear Eagle F1 (GSD2) are no longer in production and these were the only 16" tyres MGR recommends.

Personally, i've been running non-standard tyres since 1997 with no problems at all, there are loads of people on here also running non-standard tyres and there are a number of 'recommended' brands from people on here.

MGR published a tech bulletin some time back to this effect. They've changed suppliers themselves, but haven't published (AFAIK) an update to that original bulletin.
Find another tyre dealer.

No one has mentioned them yet but when I replaced the rear NCT3's on my 2001 1.8i the tyre chappies suggested Goodyear Venturas. They are a bit like Eagle F1s but not as hardcore, give a really good ride/grip compromise and the wet weather performance was fantastic - couldn't see a thing out the back for all the spray! One tyre test said they felt a bit odd in the dry, as if you could feel the blocks moving about but I now have 4 on my 306 XSi and they are great. Anyone else tried these?

Tony, I have Venturas on the rear of my "F" - fitted as replacements when one of the NCT's (on when I bought the car) picked up a screw in a non-repairable area - no complaints at all, and now the fronts are due for replacement I shall have Venturas fitted there as well.

Someone else who has tried them! Funny how these havn't appeared in all the tyre chat recently. Here is the test I originally found and also covers F1s. For those with a bit of time you can probably compare the performance but they were on different cars.

Hi,

Yes, Venturas are excellent tyres. I have them on my 214 (15") and, by the way, 16" F1's on the F. I wasn't too happy with the Venturas when they were first fitted, they seemed to be soft with a lot of steering drag, but I soon became used to it. I think they have softer sidewalls than the Pirelli P600's they replaced. They're brilliant in the wet, which is what you want. I never get the tyres squealing in the dry, it is suicide in many ways to drive in that manner. Sexy tread pattern too.

Oh yes, I hired a Suzuki 4-wheel drive in N Cyprus a couple of years ago. Just turning into a gentle bend caused the tyres to squeal, and braking was a nightmare. Whoever made those tyres should be in prison (along with whoever designed the car).

Regards, Kes.

We hired the same thing in Malta and I got it stuck on a hairpin bend due to crappy tyres. Into 4wd and low range and it still sat there tyres smoking away. Loads of pulling on the handbrake to stop the rears spinning finally got it going but the tyres were harder than the concrete road - god knows what they would have been like in the wet!
