Have you got the correct width belt fitted?
mike

I had what was best described as metal to metal screaching sound, ended up being the rear brake pads worn(they have a warning device on the pads, metal spring plate which rubs the brake pad when they get low)Hope this helps to a while to discover this with the help of the people on the BBS site!
Colin Ballard

Belt correct width and no its not brake pads huh.

A whining belt is often indicative of too much tension - I guess you used the spring and pillar belt to help you set the tension, but it may be worth going back to check. If nothing else, it is something that is simple and easy to correct.
Rob Bell

Dont think its the tension as had it off and on twice and still the same a can get the belt half a twist at the longest point thats the way i have always been taught to tension belts anyway. When its wet the alternator belt screeches its head of intermittantly usually when coming to a stop and driving away again i could see the dash light dimming when it was gonna screech then it would screech and the dash would go bright again just like a slipping belt tensioned correctly too but not rover genuine belt maybe?

That doesn't sound overly excessive to me either Andy.

I think you've been through the logical progression here: new cam belt, new tensioner, new water pump, correct tension. Not sure what else it could be unless one of the new parts - possibly the tensioner, was faulty as supplied (it would fit with the onset of the noise when you replaced the cam belt).

Would this fit with the noise localisation?
Rob Bell

Are all the plastic parts (shroud, sp?) in place and lined up ? Had some difficulty myself to get all together without any gaps. There is a chance that the black plastic down at the pulley gets in contact with either the belt, pulley or any other moving part. And that will give some alarming noises... /Carl.
Carl

No the noise definetly sounds as though coming from crank pulley area. I have also ran the car with no plastic covers on so aint the covers either. Had a ex-rover guy have a quick listen and he never heard it before either and can't think what would be.No one wanna listen got noise on computer email andrew@swan79.wanadoo.co.uk you will need real player and when open file with it will need to download to listen to mp2 file cos its recorded from a phone.

Yes Rob, you can download a Real Player application for Mac from their web site for free. If you have OSX then the link is.....

http://forms.real.com/real/player/blackjack.html?platform2=Mac%20OS%20X&product=RealPlayer%2010&proc=g3&lang=&show_list=0&src=macjack

Useful if you want to listen to any BBC programmes via the internet!

Rob Bell

You mean (robert.m.bell@kcl.ac.uk) anyway i have sent the email to you with the sound.

I was speaking to a guy the day and he asked if genuine belt i said no it was a QH Quinten Hazel something like that and he said there crap and the noise is proberly because the pitch of the teeth on the belt differ from the genuine belt causing the noise what you think everyone??

Hard luck Rob.
