MG MGF Technical - Help. My clutch has gone

I was driving back from London today on the A1,with about 120 miles to go I attemted to change down to 4th on approach to a roundabout. I depressed the clutch pedal and got nothing.
I managed to drive home and on arrival checked my resevoir which is fine.Im hoping its just the clutch cable that has snapped but I have no idea where it runs on the car, does it run through the transmission tunnel or underneath the car.
Any help would be appreciated.
Ben

There's no cable.
It's all hydraulic. Was this sudden, or have you been having clutch control / gear selection problems for a while ?
Does pumping the clutch pedal help at all ?
Steve

Thats why I cant find the cable then. Ive had no problems so far, whilst driving I did pump the clutch a few times with a bit of revs to see what would happen. The revs would shoot up as if in neutral but not consistantly.Ive never had a clutch go before so Im a bit lost.
Thanks for answering Steve.

Just been out and tried pumping the clutch whilst trying to select reverse and it doesnt work, I darent try a forward gear as I will end up in my garage door if it works. I had the Hydragas pumped up on monday, could something have been damaged in the process?
Ben

Sounds like the clutch has indeed gone west. You will need a new one. There is no adjustment available in the hydraulic system to fix it. My old F's clutch went at about 120,000km and IIRC cost me about $NZ500 odd plus labour to replace it.

clutches don't usually break just like that - I'd suspect hydraulic failure 90% of the time. Especially if the operating arm has gone tight where it passes through the bell-housing, causing either the master or slave cylinder seals to fail due to excess pressure. Any half-competent local garage should be able at least to accurately diagnose the problem, and hydraulics are relatively easy and cheap to fix. The tight operating lever usually responds to lots of WD40 and working back and forth.

My friend has just looked at the money pit and is certain that an internal part of the clutch has gone, so weve pushed it into the garage where it will stay until next weekend. Hopefully by then I will have stopped sulking and will take it to the dealer to get fixed.
