MG MGF Technical - Help! This sound is driving my crazy!

Hi People - really need your help

I'm sure it is related to the brakes, but when I slow down to almost a walking pace, there is a very loud knocking noise as the wheels go round. The car has been to 2 separte garages and the most recent (yesterday) dismantled all the front braking system (pads and discs) and put back together again and the noise dissappeared, but now it is back. The braking performance doesn't seem to be affected, but as you can imagine, it is very annoying. The knocking is quite violent and I can feel it thru the brake pedal as well. Has anyone encountered this before? It is definitely a revolutionary thing. Sounds like something is banging on something metal/structural as the wheels are going round. Help!

Without knowing details of your car Paul, could it be the ABS operating.

I know it shouldn't, braking as you describe, but I have heard pads making that noise when they operate quickly, as ABS will.

Paul, i had exactly what you describe a year or 2 ago and my car was back and forth to the garage twice, before i took the mechanic out with me on the third time. In my case it turned out to be worn cv joints and it cured the problem. I too thought it was linked to the brakes, as if something was sticking out of the wheel and striking the bodywork every revolution, weird. HTH.

Hi DaveyC, what exactly are the cv joints?

CV joints = Constant Velocity joints.

Two types are in use on the MGF.
Outer CV joint is of a ball and socket type (or ball and cage) whereas the Inner joint is of a tripode type.
These are on the two drive shafts that connect from the gearbox to the rear wheels.

Usually the cage gets worn which makes the ball bearings clatter in side it. You then get clicks and clunks transmitted to the suspension and the steering.
