MG MGF Technical - HGF

Does HGF mean engine out for the replacement? and what is the cost of the parts needed? My 1998 VVC has just gone bang!

Thanks in advance...

Chris.

From £450 upwards depending on how bad things are.

Sorry wrong answer, a garage would charge £450 for changing it. Parts cost around £26 for uprated gasket depends on what else is required. as for engine out I believe it can be done it situ.

Chris - I posted on the other thread that you added to.

The job is done in situ and can cost anywhere in the region of £450, to a new engine depending on the damage. MGR quoted me £750 as long as the head didnt need skimming!! Did the job myself and it took two days and I'm a mechanic (aircraft mind)fiddley as hell.

Just had Head gasket replacement this week, as an engine check showed slight coolant leak and Pressure test showed up an imminent HGF.

Breakdown of my Bill shown below;

Replace Head gasket (labour) £618
Specialist Cylinder Head Inspection £70
Gasket Set - Cylinder (QLVQ000090) £74.50
Oil filter ( QLPW100180) £4.29
Esso oil (ZNF02055) 9 x £2.50 =£22.50
Stud (QTE108065M) 7 x £0.29 = £2.03
Kit - liquid gasket (UGGC 108) £9.31
Engine Coolant (UGEC 1002) 2 x £7.46 = £14.92
Coolant Engine (UGEC 1001) £4.00
Belt Engine Timing (QCDU 2749) £24.33
Washer Sealing (QALU 1403) £0.40

TOTAL £844.28 + VAT = £992.03

OUCH!!

P.S. All work carried out at MGROVER Dealership Garage.

Is this expensive or about right?
I would be interested to hear of other recent HGF costs carried out at a dealership?
Mike

>Specialist Cylinder Head Inspection £70

Sounds a bit strange 4me.
I always though this is a 5 minutes job with help of a good 20 inch steel ruler, set of thickness gauge and good eyes.

Please correct me if I'm wrong. What else could mean _inspection_ ?
Grinding the head is another case of costs though.

On my invoice it is billed with the note "SUB"
This stands for "SUBLET", i guess it may mean that it was checked over and passed by a specialist from MG Rover ? For a warranty to be approved possibly?
Mike

>>i guess it may mean that it was checked over and passed by a specialist

I'd have thought it was a hardness test and yes sent out to a company that does this.
