MG MGF Technical - HGF Advice Please:(

Just checked my oil and noticed a little "mayo" on the dipstick. I know this is a sign of HGF but is it definite? The car hasn't been used much this last week and the coolant hasn't gone down. If so has can anyone recommend someone who will do a quality repair? Ive been quoted £800 by the MGOC, who are local to me and I would rather have the job done well. Bummer but I love the car.

Mayo on the dipstick can also be caused by condensation in the engine. Normally I would suggest a decent drive to warm the engine up would get rid of it, but if you have suspected HGF then you may do better to take the car to a garage, or the MGOC.
They can compression test the engine, and also check for exhaust gases in the coolant.
These are more sure fire ways of detecting HGF.
Good luck

A little mayo on the top of the dipstick is fine, mine nearly always has it. What you need to worry about is the oil condition at the bottom of the dipstick (although mayo often transfers to the 'ball' on the bottom of the dipstick when you remove for checking.)

Hopefully that makes sense!

It does make sense, ta. Unfortunately its also what my work mates have told me and my mayo is on the bottom of the stick (the top is clear). On the bright side I can get my cam belts and a few other bits changed at the same time and hopefully have a good summer with the car. Thanks for the info.

As my car hadn't lost any water at all I decided to take it on a long (130 mile) drive with a few stops on the way. This cleared the mayo and I have still lost no water, so hopefully...

However, my coolant expansion tank is actually filled to about 1cm over the maximum mark (when cold) and has been since I bought it. Can anyone tell me if this is a major problem and do I need to drain some out immediately? The garage that sold me the car serviced it first and they weren't MG experts by any means.
C Hudson

Doubt it, I have never filled mine too accurately.

Not a problem :o)
