MG MGF Technical - HGF - Coolant Colour
Guys, what is the correct colour of the coolant liquid as mines greeny brown, more brown, is this right? No other signs of HGF though.. Regards, MG |

Depends on the age of the antifreeze. If it's gone brown, its old, and probably wants replacing at the next service. Colour should be as seen on this link (in window 'B'): http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/hgf_checks.jpg |

..is not brown coolant an indicator of mixing the 2 types of antifreeze that you are not supposed to ? |

Cheers guys, So having browney coloured coolant doesn't mean that you have HGF then? Regards, Mike |

No, more like rust contamination from the underbody coolant pipes. These will go thin and spring a small leak, this then causes an air lock and you end up with localised hot spots in the engine that causes a thermal shock condition that wipes out the outer elastomeric strip on the head gasket = HGF. Any non standard sign should be viewed and analysed. It may enable you to pre-empt a problem arising and so break a chain that becomes expensive. Rog |
