MG MGF Technical - HGF Head Skimming
Is it true that after the head has been skimmed the engine will have a noticable change in BHP ? |

Up or down?? |

You would need to skim an enormous amount off to make that much difference and I would imagine that if it required so much skimming the head would be knackered! Ted |

skimming the head will give a slightly greater compression ratio, which could give more power with apporate fuel and mapping. Skimming for HGF does not take off this much, and there are tolerances after which rover say the head is scrap, where this may not be true, you may need to change the ECU to use it. |

It's a far cry from the days when I skimmed 105 thou off a £10 head from the scrappy for my mini on a shaping machine at Uni, Yeah that's over a 1/10 of an inch! and after some serious jiggerypokery with the carb it delivered a MASSIVE increase in horsepower (from perhaps 44 to, I dunno 54... ) peformance was radically altered as was the way the engine delivered this, but at all in all it's still only 50 something horses! I sold the car to an undertaker, and Bought an Alfa which was in a different league of performance! |

But, higher compression ratio means you can get more power from higher octane fuels like optimax, but you won't be able to use normal fuels. |
