MG MGF Technical - HGF question

Directly after (withinh 1 mile) my F's 4 yr service and MOT (main dealer), I noticed that there was no water in the expansion tank. Returning to the garage they diagnosed HGF. As the coolant was changed at the service, what is the possibility that HGF was caused by what was done?. The coolant was changed by the MGR approved method (evac, rather than bleeding). They have offered to go 50/50 towards the cost of repair.

Or perhaps by changing the coolant finished off a weak gasket, althought I have not had any previous water loss).

Keith,

Sounds like too much of a coincidence to me.

Head gasket is designed to fail if coolant temperature is too high, either due to coolant loss or air-lock.

I would hold out for the full amount.

Are you sure the head gasket actually failed and what you noticed was that the coolant was not refilled to the correct level. I only ask as I recently suffered the exact same problem with my Freelander. The vehicle was collected and returned by the dealer, when I used it the next day the engine warning light flashed continuously, I stopped and checked to find that the water was only just showing in the header bottle, I topped it up to the correct level and it has not changed since. This was at the begining of March. The Service Manager at the dealer did receive a lengthy and none to happy phone call from yours truly

Which means they think that they are guilty, truth of the matter is thet you took it to them, and when it was returned it was either broken or ready to become broken because they were incompetant.

The F has a fragile gasket, I have some fragile plates, but I don't drop them so they don't break.

Des,

Yes, it started to use water. I put 2 pints in and after the journey home it required another pint ( and another pint to get it back to the garage the next day).

Sorry to hear that, however I agree with Sam and Will,
still should be all down to the dealer.
