MG MGF Technical - HGF Survey

Can I make a suggestion here about what seems to be a major topic for MGF's - HGF?

Just so you know where I'm coming from, one of my cars is a Toyota Hilux of which there are two main engine variants - a 2.4 and a 3 litre diesel. The 2.4 has a very bad (and deserved) reputation for HGF due to a poor design not allowing enough coolant through to keep the engine cool. This became a major debating point in the club and led to the belief that all 2.4's would suffer from it at some point. What the club did to determine the extent of the problem was hold an online survey. This found that the problem was not as bad as made out.

This leads me to the MGF. I am currently looking for one for the missus and I must admit that all the 'negative' postings on here and other places are off-putting.

How about holding a survey here too? Information to include would be year, engine, whether a HGF has occured, and if it did at what year and at what mileage. This can be manipulated into a nice little graph to show (based on the sample rate) just how extensive the problem is, and whether there are patterns to age and mileage, or whether it is purely random luck.

As I'm a new member feel free to tell me to sod off!

Dear D Forber,

I am a new member too that has been given a MGF by my boyfriend. Please don't sod off, I for one think your survey idea is a good one.
To start, my car is 1999 MGF vvc, 73,000 miles and according to service history no HGF

As newer owners you probably haven't met the HallofShame site where we are encouraged to post HGF info. I can't find the link at the mo but somebody will in due course.

general: HGF is more frequent than it should be but is by no means obligitary. There are many cars on this, and other, forums with mileages over 100k that have never suffered HGF. Equally there are too many that have suffered below 30k.

Neil you nutter, the chanting is appreciated but I'd rather have the thermostat that everyone is talking about - no offence. Believe me I look at these forums (when I should be working) then I drive thinking any moment now - HGF!!!
But other times I think sod it - no point worrying just drive and enjoy the car, so I do.

From what I can se on shame.4mg, they only represent people who have had a HGF not as proportion of say all the MGF's in Austrailia seem's to be just a knocking shop.
I Wills

It wasn't started, or used, as a knocking shop (has the usage changed) but as a record for possible duscussions with MGR. No other record was being kept at the time and suggestions of a problem were being emphatically denied.

Glad to see that the data is still being maintained. The graphics need a bit of updating as there has been a recent rise in the number of 2002 cars failing.

Problem is - the data is only people who can be bothered to submit and will never include those who haven't had a problem.

Many F/TF owners never visit sites like this, in fact never speak to other F/TF owners at all except while waiting at a dealers.
