MG MGF Technical - HGF & costs
Just been through the archives, I think the HGF went last night, 1998 vvc, 34k miles. Drop in power, then whining noise..thought it was London traffic, then as I parked up, noticed water gauge high and smoke coming from the rear. Presume it is HGF, though I'm not technically minded. Questions: 1.If I fill rad with water, could I drive it to garage say 10 miles, or should I get RAC to tow? 2. Was going to take it to G Kingsbury in Hampton, anyone know of alternatives in SW London? Someone mention Cox & Buckle ? or Buckle & Ellis ?in Wimbledon, but I can't find them on Google - does anyone know them or alternatives? 3. Likely cost? Any advice appreciated. Best Wishes Nick Sutton, Battersea, SW11 |

Nick, I wouldn't risk driving it. If it's just head gasket repair - £500ish If more damage has been done - £????? Been there, done that. Sam |

if it ever happens to my F it'll be a lot more expensive because it will o[pen the floodgates of the darkside Dave Andrews will be getting a call |

Could you get the AA to take the car to Kingsbury? |

Rac took car to G Kingsbury, £500 + vat for HGF, though there is talk about replacing fan belt while HGF taken off, not sure if this is necessary. Nick |

Nick, I think it might be the timing belt they are suggesting you have changed whike the HGF is being repaired. It should have been done after 5 years. Sam |

Did they mean cam belt as this has to come off anyway to remove the head. On a 98 it should have been changed in 2003 and your next one is 2008 but cheaper to do it now rather than another £500 in 2 years. |
