MG MGF Technical - HGF............TF!

Just got back from local MGR dealer, while there noticed TF 160 in workshop with it's innards spread around,"What's wrong with that?".....HGF!....13K. ooer! "Another crappy K series??" Regards.

No big surprise really.

Actually I think it is the same K series!

Surprising for a HG to go on a 160 engine - but it probably is too old to benefit from the latest design thermostat...
Rob Bell

Have you added it to the HOS?

The HG can go in any car regardless of type surely? If the owner jumps in the car and revs the t*ts off it from cold every time then the gasket will fail eventually (Voice of experience in my old mk1 Punto!)
Bob Millar

No offense, though.
I've seen a MGZR yesterday at an official dealer with *HGF*.

In truth it came out from their investigation that the engine had totally over-rev'd (spelling?). The owner had accelerated and missed the next upper gear. Keyed in the next lower instead... voila, pistons hit the valves. (I've seen the opened engine with my own eyes. Not enough, the owner went on for a while and *puff*, gasket gone.

Anyway, I hope you get it fixed under warranty, the above mentioned didn't ;)

Err what new thermostat. I've just bought one this week and there is no difference in it at all from my old one fitted in Nov 99. That is apart from the 3.5mm hole I drilled in it.

"Another crappy K series??"

Deserves these responses IMO:

Mechanic did say something about the stat' being "moved?", sorry I didn't take more notice, but I was in a mad rush to get away.(Didn't like the look of all the gremlins sat on the showroom roof, waiting to pounce!)Will speak to him again about it. Regards.

Gentlemen, it was just a tongue in cheek remark following MEGA'S recent attack.I am no F/TF expert, but from limited experience and reading these threads, the two major gripes, HGF and throttle response, surely should have been ironed out, with a bit of R&D after ten years production. Regards.

I had my first HGF on my 1931 Raleigh motorbike - it is an unfortunate fact of life that head gaskets do 'let go' from time to time on ANY vehicle and the internal combustion engine has been in production for well over 100 years so I think it is problem that we just have to live with.

Raleigh gave up manufacturing bikes in the end though Ted. :-)

>>Not enough, the owner went on for a while and *puff*, gasket gone.<<

It would NOT be the first time that a head gasket has failed as a result of some other failure ...... and there are many. Not just mechanical failure, human failings (both crooked owners and dealers) and cover ups ... you name it. Here, even the "best" of dealerships can and have played their part .... by causing the original failures in the first place ... Here I speak from several personal experiences: example... failure to tighten the radiator hose clamp following a routine job on the car. Pressure builds up ... loss of coolant. Then... "They all do that Sir"..... Do they Hell!!

However, much more expeditious to blame the car which is NOT always at fault.

A quick check of cars for sale, particularly "Spares/Repair" examples of a wide variety of different marques on the various websites; will show many offered because of head gasket failures...... be it a Merk, Bavarian origin or what have you.....
