MG MGF Technical - HGF - what parts to replace during repair?

MGR confirm HGF on my 97 1.8, but good news is that head etc at first sight looks ok. They have yet to determine cause, saying they will do so once they replace the gasket and undertake a pressure test etc.

As it is being covered under AA warranty, I've asked MGR to fit a new waterpump and cambelt at £50 and £30 respectively.

They are however charging me half-an-hour's labour for replacing the waterpump - does that sound about right?

Any other parts I should replace whilst they are at it?

many thanks
Paul

ps car had been due for its next service in August, presume I can now extend that given the fluids etc will have been changed?

While the head is off I would be tempted to get Dave Andrews to do a Quick and dirty port £300

I don't think Dave Andrews does 'quick and dirty'!

Paul,
What you have done is basically down to one thing. "Budget".
With the pump and cambelt, you are right. If it is off and easily replaced, then that is the way to go. I would take this one stage further. Replace anything that may fail within the next repair life. Within you workscope I would replace the Alternator Belt and any rubber pipe that is disturbed and is more than 5 years old (All of them !!). Any MGR Wire pipe clips may be replaced with stainless Jubilee Clips.
You will be told on this BBS to examine the underbody coolant pipes. I am concerned by an item on the BBS which suggested that the OEM pipes corrode from the inside such that you cannot see the deterioration until it is too late. Someone, probably MS, sells aluminium pipes. I have yet to understand the logic of going for aluminium. Does anybody do Stainless Steel pipes ??

>half-an-hour's labour for replacing the waterpump - does that sound about right?

Sounds not to much 4me.

Would additionally
- replace head bolts, to go the secure way (if they can't find the reason for the gone gasket)
- sensitive check of the cylinder liners height difference to the block surface (spelling? I know there is a special word for this term ???..)
- no grinding of the head surface if it's not warped but within the recommended tolerance.
- replace as many standard hose clamps as possible with stainless steel clamps.

Thanks Dieter - are the head bolts the same as steel dowels? If so that's what they will be using.
Paul Bevan

Yes, Dieter is right about the <head bolts>. These are the long bolts that clamp the cylinder head on. They should be 'use once only' and be part of the HGF repair but not all garages replace them as they are about £6.00 each. They are in fact stretch bolts which are tightened to a stretch length by tightening them by an angle (degrees).

Ok, spoke to MGR and they confirm stretch bolts have been replaced and they'll do the alternator belt too. The hoses all look in good nick according to the garage...
thanks all
Paul Bevan

Geoff,

In accordance with the official manual, you don't have to replace the bolts as long as they are of the size mentioned on the manual. I.e. they haven't stretch. It may be recomended to do so, but not entirely necessary.

"I have yet to understand the logic of going for aluminium. "
Explanation:- aluminum, lighter, no corrosion, transfers heat better ,same material as the engine is made of, easy to work with.........

One more question to those in the know - what are the implications for "n/s/r shock mount adrift"? Showed up on the garage's report

thanks
