MG MGF Technical - HI-Spec for VVC Wheels

Hello All

Has any one put HI-Spec Callipers on there VVC MGF??

One chap Paul N, who used to post here used the Hi-spec calipers successfully with VVC wheels. He was a tremendous track driver and real exponent of the 15" rim and Bridgestone SO2's. I have to say that although there is a huge bias to 16" or larger rims the 15" give amazing progressive feel. Two bit of feed-back which have been given are; that they are buggers to bleed, and Hi-spec themselves can be a bit slow in responsing to queries, but if you buy through a re-seller that shouldn't be a problem.

I was very close to buying them some years ago but then got a good deal on trophy wheels and AP calipers.

Regards

Hmm - I don't think that I so have pictures of Paul's brakes unfortunately - but he might. I'll ask him - perhaps he still has pictures although he no longer has the car... :o)

I promise it is luck that I popped back at this time... but I appreciate the comment about my track driving! <blush>

Onto brakes...

The HiSpec brakes fit until the 15" 5-spoke rims just fine, but they are tight. I needed to use a 2mm spacer on the hub. The callipers themselves are very well built and work tremendously well - still the most aggressive brakes I've used on track. They can be a pain in the ar$e to bleed and HiSped can also be a pain in the ar$e to deal with.
Make sure you fit braided hoses, use good fluid and use decent pads to get the most from the brakes, as they can produce a tremendous amount of heat!

I'd still suggest today that 15" wheels will be better for most drivers giving more feel. :-) A popular mod on my current car is to DOWNSIZE the wheels at the front to provide the balance that some feel was sacrificed when the marketing dept wanted bigger rims. ;o)

I don't have any photos at the moment as I'm in the middle of switching PCs... but I'm sure I must have some about.

Paul.

ps. If they are 2nd hand... it may just be my old callipers as they were separated from the car.

pps. Rob, I have a skeleton for you!!!

I'm sure that Rob will be along in a moment with some ideas about rear brakes....

Paul, crikey, I'd nearly forgotten about Freddie! Has he been a good boy hiding in the cupboard? LOL

Must meet up again soon anyway, and you can show me your Luton beastie ;o)

Rear brakes, yes, HiSpec have allegedly been working on these/had them for years - but HiSpec being HiSpec, one can't be 100% sure. Good product, but their customer care... well...

Another option is to use a larger rear brake rotor while retaining the standard caliper. This is what I have on my car (the kit was developed by VHS - the former MG Rover chassis gurus responsible for the TF chassis development) - and the result is certainly well worth the effort.

Picture of before and after below also goes to emphasise that the aesthetic reasons for going for this mod! ;o)
