MG MGF Technical - High mileage K series

There's been a lot of comment about the HGFs suffered by K series engines, but I was just curious; what's the K series like when it gets to 100k+ miles? Does it wear well, and what big things need replacing to keep it going?

Thanks for any thoughts you might have.

I wonder if there is any K-engines without at least one HGF during a 100k miles life...

My '96 mpi has covered a little more than half that distance (90.000km). 2 HGFs but apart from that not much serious trouble. Broken window stoppers, leaking window seal, squeaking hood, one slack steering joint - all in all what could be expected from a six year old car. So far no rust and no oil consumption.

I have 62+k miles on mine. Engine is still as sweet as a nut. :o) No HGF.

Ralph has 142k (I think?) I suspect that he's had one HGF - but the engine is still going strong - but I shouldn't speak for his experiences!!! Over to you Ralph...

Yup, my F's engine has done over 142k miles. One HGF at 83k when the water pump failed. The pump probably failed because the heater pipe failed the previous month. I'm told that the replacement pipe has corroded as well - time for a MS stainless one I think! No other major replacements yet (touch wood!), just the odd anciliary item that you would expect, e.g. coil and HT leads.

I changed to Mobil 1 at the 12k service and ran on that up to the last service. I've now switched back to 'standard oil'. The oil consumption, which has always been on the high side, seemed to increase somewhat prior to the last service.

Once over about 125k miles the K series hydraulic tappets often get slightly blocked and start to tick. Other than this I have seen many engines crack over 150k still going strong, at least one with no failures and another with a broken cambelt and bent valves!

My F isn't old enough to judge yet, but I got the classic HGF in a Rover 214i at 83,000 miles. The engine was a write-off, but fortunately re-conditioned 1.4's are pretty easy to find. It was running pretty well up to that point.
