MG MGF Technical - hinges
Got a bad, Very loud clickiing/thudding noise coming from my door hinges when theyre opened past 45 degrees. Nit nice at all. Its coming from the silver arm between the 2 hinges that limits how far the door can be opened, the pin or the hole that it is going into is worn, think the whole lot needs replacing, anyone know if this can be done????and if so how 'easy' is it??? This answer was posted on another bbs by somebody who knows about these things. I've missed his name off as I haven't asked if I can paste in here. I shall make my peace with him (if necessary) when I meet him at an event soon. "the door hinges complete are about 16squids so they aren't expensive, would advise changing the complete hinge, the pins AFAIK are not available as a separate item and there are two bushes which usually wears rather than the pin so it isn't practical to repair. To fit remove the front wing liner and change one at a time, if really too awkward then remove front wing for better acess." |

GC, the pin you are refering to is the taper roll pin, this is easily replaced with a new one. different from the actual hinge pins.HTH |

OK........ Whos Right?. My hinges make the same "click" . JP says "Replace full Hinge". Mike says" Replace just the Pin" ????. |

Mike runs a very successfull business mending and improving MGs - who would you trust? Mike also provided the other response to a slightly different question. |

HMMMMMmmmmmmm, so thats who it is! Thank you JP, once again first class advice, if I may be so bold!. |

If you read the postings carefully the GC is complaining about a noise from the door restraining strap even though he says hinges he means the strap. Unfortunatly JP took the quote from another board that was about the hinges and hence the confusion. Hinges don't click but the restraining strap does. To summarise, if the door drops when opening, replace the hinges, if it clicks replace the taper roll pin (not the hinge pin) All clear?? |
