MG MGF Technical - HiSpec Billet 4 brakes

Hi
To anyone who may know wich are the prices of the MGF front brake kit 285 mm discs calipers billet 4 from HiSpec, and the rear 285mm disc kit (same company).

Especially Tim Woolcott and Paul Nothard

Front Brake work out as follows:

Th kit which Hispec sell includes Calipers, discs and fixing bracket.

Braided lines and Brake pads are bought separately. When I totalled up the cost it came to just a fraction over 600 pounds, That included the VAT though.

So for just the Hispec kit without lines and pads probably 500. They are a fanstic looking piece of kit and VERY effective, just make sure you have them bled correctly. each caliper has 4 (yes, 4) nipples.

In my case however, despite really wanting the Hispecs I found that since I can sell my existing 16' wheels, aquiring a pair of trophy wheels and trophy calipers (with discs) was going to work out quite a bit cheaper from Victoria at MGF Centre.

When I spoke to Hispec last month they hadn't quite got there rear brake kit sorted out, so you may have to wait just a little longer for that one.

Think you answered everything there Tim. :-)
All in, my front brakes were £611 inc vat - but they are *very* effective and worth every penny imho.

Tim and Paul, lot of TX to both. I've decided fit them in, and only have the problem of the homologation. I hope beeing two countries on the European Union, it won't be a big problem....

Next week i'll send them a fax (no more e-mail stuff)

P.S.: Billet 4 kit is then in the range of prices I've expected
P.P.S.: what pads are you using?

Is the only consideration to fit HI-spec brakes that they fit behind regular 16" wheels and trophys only behind trophy wheels and thus involve bigger investment, or is there another catch to it?

I thought MGF centre found away fit trophys behind i.e. abingdon style wheels? is this true?

cheers,
David.
David

One consideration is, for me at least, that they do a kit that fit behind standard 15" wheels. I didn't want to have to change to 16" wheels.

However, that is not the only reason I went for them. Simply put, they are *very* effective brakes for a reasonable price.
I'm not sure why the Trophy brakes are seen as the best by many. I don't believe they are. And they're often very expensive.
The HiSpec kits and (I'm told) the Mike Satur kits are well worth looking at as an alternative to the hype of the trophy brakes. :-)

I'm using Mintex 1155 pads in my setup and they perform well for me. I do many track days and abuse the car quite a bit. (I broke my last brakes!)
Drop me an email offline if you want any more info on the brake kits or my experience fitting them.

Cheers,
Paul

Hi,

I have been looking for a big brake kit (front and rear) too.

(I posted long time ago... I stil have not got one yet).

Where can I get "Hi-spec" brake kits?
It comes with 4 pot caliper ?

So this brake will fit my 15 inch wheels, right?

I though the Mike Satur brake kits are same as original size?

My F friend told me if I get 4 pot caliperk, that should be good enough, even if I use original brake disks. Is it true?

thanks in advance,
Akira
Akira

Akira, Mike Satur has a good brake upgrade kit, and I've considered recently. You can fit is 280 mm discs in 15 ". Unfortunately, the 4 pot callipers dont fit unless you have 16" alloy. :(

I've only found the HiSpec kit able to fit in my 15", both 285 mm discs AND 4 pots calliper (and they look very impresive)

And don't forget the most important factor in a brake system is the diameter of the discs!!!!

Just I've found:

Hi Akira,

for some of the options that Spinder's been discussing, see http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/brakes/index.htm

There may be other options that aren't listed (please let me know if there are)...

Another option, if you don't mind doing some more work, and getting some parts custom machined, is to follow the example of Don Liang, who has modified Subaru parts to fit his MGF. See the link from Don's MGF Garage: http://netcity3.web.hinet.net/UserData/donliang/300mmBrakeDisc.htm

Good luck! :o)

checked the price of subaru“s 4pot caliper in Belgium,
double the price as what Don payed for it. So far the Subaru route:-(

Spinder00, Rob, david,

thanks for the info...

I will look into it.

Thanks again,

Wondering if 15" really means MPi and VVC 15" or only VVC 15".

Bit tricky to spend more than £600 to find out you need to invest in bigger wheels and tyres.
Erik

HiSpec simply state 15".
However, they fit the older style 5 spoke VVC wheel for sure - but they are very tight and may require some shims.

Paul Nothard

If they are tight around the 15" 5-spoke VVC rims, then I strongly suspect that they'll not fit behind 15" 6-spoke MPi wheels :o(

There is some scope for HiSpec to alter the bracket that they use by 1-2mm as it's CNC Ali.
All boils down to how much they want our business I guess.

There are other options to get it to fit if you really want to keep your 15" wheels as I did.

For 15" wheels, the HiSpec route really has to the best route to take. It's only when you get into the 16" wheels that you meet real competition from the likes of Mike Satur and the Trophy brakes.
