MG MGF Technical - Hood

Hi Guys,

Wondered if anyone could help me. When I put the hood down it had started to jam half way down. I have put WD40 and oil onto it but only seems to solve the problem for a day of so.

Can anyone suggest anything?

Thanks in advance
Alan

Alan,

It's probably the second bar back from the front getting in the way catching on the first... if you stand above the roof you'll see it... as you're putting the hood down, push this bar to the back and it should be fine...

Does that make any sense whatsoever?

Cheers

The easiest method if it is the bar is to pull the canvas as I always put my roof down from outside the car so I can make sure the rear screen is folded safely to avoid cracking it and find by pulling the canvas at the side so it folds out rather than in. This will move the bar back as Chris mentioned to aid the roof from not jamming.

There is an elastic paty available from MGR dealers which was fitted to the TF as part of a recall which I beleive stops this jamming.

Hopefully you understand this.

Tim Jenner posted recently an official 'fix' to this hood locking problem: a set of elasticated webbing.

Fitting instructions are on Tim's website, but I can't remember the URL right now? It'll be in a thread in the General archives...

I believe this is the one you're looking for:

I fitted the elasticated webbing a while back to my F and it's completely cured the problem.

Yup, not had my hood "lock" up since my TF had the hood recall done. Basically two elasticated straps that prevent the hood material become pinched on the hood frame when the hood is lowered and also stops the "lock-up" problem.

I have a 6 month old TF hood, but I bought it second hand and it doesn't have the recall mod, either it wasn't done or the straps have been removed for use elsewhere.

Straps are £24.65 from Rover, bit expensive for a bit of strapping but could save a fortune by preventing hood wear.

Am I missing something?

My 1996 MGF with original hood has elasticated straps to prevent just this problem - did the 'bean counters' remove them from later models?

Ted,

My 98 had two thin elasticated straps above the seat belt type strapping on the hood, but this is inefficient and the new mod is a wider elasticated strap which goes alongside the original adding extra pulling strength.

Are you saying that your 96 has something similar to the new mod?
Chris Catchpole

Not having seen the new mod it is difficult for me to say BUT the straps fitted on my '96 *F* work well - remember this is the Mkl three piece hood.

I think it may be a case that the narrow elastic strap on a batch of TF's was ineffective (too long perhaps?) resulting in the hood material becoming pinched in the hood frame when the roof was lowered. This in turn leads to holes wearing in the hood fabric and then a warranty replacement. I'm 90% sure my TF has the narrow elastic straps and I suffered this problem and subsequently had the hood replaced under warranty. This was all prior to the hood recall which has now been carried out on my car. The hood material never gets trapped in the hood frame any more and the hood never 'locks up' when lowered. :)

Just checked and YES it is a narrow piece of elastic stitched to the main webbing between the two centre cross rails BUT it is a very tough piece of elastic.
