MG MGF Technical - Hood cover question?

Just about to sell my black hood cover probably on e-bay. It's off a 1996 VVC but does anyone know if this only fits Mk 1 mgf's or does it also fit the Mk2's, TF's etc?

Dominic, I presume you know the difference between Mk 1 & Mk 2 cover?

A Mk2 car will need the posts on the 2 ends of the t-bar removing and replaciing with Mk1 type press studs - in fact the reverse of what I did this morning when I upgraded to a Mk2 cover.

There is virtually no market for Mk1 covers as VGC Mk2s are available for £40 from MGF Centre complete with the t-bar posts.

Has anyone fitted a full toneau to an MGF please?

While you wait for somebody who has one ...

MGR did supply a full tonneau but I've never yet seen one fitted. I recently spoke to a lady who had one and she had only ever met two others.

It appears that MGR were selling them @ £50 at Silverstone over the weekend but I missed them.

Brown & Gammons are/were selling an after market tonneau and it may be worth ringing them or visiting them at Baldock for their advice.

Problem with the full tonneaus as I see it (and I may be wrong), it appear that you need to drill the tops of the doors to accept press studs for fixing the cover :o) Originally these full tonneaus were 250 but I guess few peaple were prepared to drill their bodywork to fit them (surprising that!) so even at 50 quid I'm not too sure how many punters will take up the offer. All that faff of fitting it and for what real gain....the hood goes up so quickly anyway...!

Tim I agree with your comment about the speed of erection but a tonneau can be usefull when driving solo during the winter - cover the passenger side and sit in a cocoon of peace and comfort with the heater wafting gently around your legs.

However, I wouldn't drill holes in the car doors to fit it! My old MGB had studs in the doors and also had water in the doors.

The door press studs are also the reason Mike Satur never delivered on his promise of a full tonneau. Mike had intended to use magnetic strips in the fabric along here but it wasn't effective as with a full contact area on the body the paintwork became scratched over time.

Shame really as i would still like one and the MGR one requires the Mk2 half tonneau cover T-Bar studs (i have Tannex clips, so it is incompatable with my MS cover). There is also a windstop compatibility issue as the MGR windstop isn't 100% compatible with the MGR ½ tonneau cover (around the mounting blocks), this is a potential leak area.

The ideal would be a couple of press studs on the top of the door car with a tongue that flaps over the door and a couple of small magnets to stick it to the bodywork intermittantly. This is the best of both worlds with minimal paintwork contact and press studs in the fibreboard of the door card.
