MG MGF Technical - Hood - does it add stiffness /fulfil a structural

Gents - i want to remove the hood from my f. Does it (when up obviously) add to the stiffness of the car or offer any roll protection at all? I suspect no on both counts but will think again if Im wrong.

All the full race cars here remove the hood and run with hardtops in the wet, they are lighter than the soft top complete. They dont offer any ROP but the front screen and surround does.

Yep I appreciate the racers run without hoods but they have cages installed - i just have the x power hoops and lord knows if theyd work if the worst was to happen!

I used to have X power hoops and felt they offered far better protection than nothing at all. As I got more serious about our club speed events I put a half cage in. This was also seeing the results of an F having a very high speed roll ( 5 times ) and the driver walking away with the same set up as I now have. The standard hood I feel offers protection against the rain only.

IMHO soft top frames can be very dangerous in the event of a roll over. There are lots of long narrow weak sections of hollow metal in a hood frame and heaven knows what would happen and which way they would bend when impacted on the road. Pictures of pieces of frame spearing the head come to mind. My car has the standard MGF Cup full cage fitted and I feel that it would do a very good job of protecting me...........if I ever race again!
