MG MGF Technical - Hood tension cable replacement
Hi, Last week I notice that my hood was starting to make lots of noises, in particular on bumpy roads, it makes me remind old LandRovers. After checking my workshop manual, I notice than my right screw catch is broken, and the other one is in bad shape, probably due to an older maintenance. Has anyone replaced this cable? Is it a DIY job? Best regards Joao |

Hi Joao, I cannot help you, but I have a similar problem. I want to slightly tighten the hood, but the adjustment screw of the catch can't be turned any further... Do you know if the cable can be adjusted on the other extremity, and if yes, where and how ? |

I think this is what you are looking for. http://www.mgfcar.de/adjust/Adjust05.jpg Sam |

Not much of help for Joao :( His problem is the other end of the cable. Anyone out there who changed the hood fabric and took some pictures of the front hood frame with cable fixture ? Nr 10, where and how fitted ? http://www.mgfcar.de/epc/3924.htm |

That’s right Dieter, you got it, I already saw that picture, but I can’t find in there the part that catch the tension cable in both sides, It’s like one of those elements that cycles used in the end of the cable brakes…I don’t know the technical name in English. I need two new elements for both sides and a new screw on the right side. I am going to take one and try to find another that fits in a motorcycle shop. Hoping my cable still fits and after that, so I could fix the tension, if not I dont' know if is possible to replace the cable for a new one without removing the canvas. Thanks Best regards Joao |

It is possible to replace the cable without removing the canvas. If your good you might be able to guide the loop around the hook on the frame through the canvas, otherwise just loosen enough around where the cable loop hooks onto the frame then re-glue. I can't remember if I was able to push the loop end of the cable all the way up the hood or if I fed it in from the top after loosening the canvas. John. |

... Tony D. you are a star :) Thank you for sending this pictures. http://www.mgfcar.de/softtop/tony.d.P1000113.JPG and http://www.mgfcar.de/softtop/tony.d.P1000109.JPG Both cable ends visible. - kind of barrel clamp on the left (rear fixture and adjustment) - the A-Frame end eyelet (loop) hanging down. Not sure about the A-Frame hook located anywere in the upper circuit mark. Tony said he bend it to open. HTH Dieter |

Hi, thanks guys the pictures are great. In the second picture that seams to me that exist two tension cables, is that true? I thought that was only one. regards Joao |

Joao There is only cable each side. The hook for the eyelet is part of the front beam/bow pressing, it leavered-up with a small screwdrive to to release it and then pushed back down flush with the main part of the pressing to trap the eyelet Don't bend it too much or too many times as it will ulitmate break and then you will say sh??. Once you peel away the hood canvas and distort the rubber seal the cable eyelet is easy to get at. If yo have the RAVE workshop manual full details are on page Hood 19 - Dieter, I have emailed you the page. TonyD |

Thanks for the advice TonyD, I going to try repair the cables without “peeling the hood”, If I fail, I let you know . Joao |

Tightening this cables didn't solve my problem. This cables only tighten the side parts of the hood above the windows. On my TF, it's the whole hood that is a bit too loose, like if the fabric had grown... I could wash it and then let it dry slack in the sun, but that would only work once IMO :oP |
