MG MGF Technical - Hose explodes why?
Hi. Ithought we may have had a HGF. What happened air from heater seemed to to get hotter. Then loud explosion from engine bay. Steam everywhere, coolant running out of engine bay. Car declutched and stopped within 20 yards. Speed at time 40mph. Engine done 50,000 fairly easy (female driving) miles . No emulsion on dipstick, no emuslsion under oil filler cap. No water now in expansion tank surprisingly. Brass rivet in expansion tank is 10mm inside cap - (is this normal?) The large bore hose 'Y' piece has big split in it near the top. WHAT HAPPENED, HOW DO I FIX IT? Pammy. Warwick / Leamington |

Had the same - make sure you get someone who knows the MGF as it will need very careful bleeding once the hose has been exchanged and the system refilled. |

PS you aint that far from a couple of the best MGF specialists in the UK BUT I am having a SENIOR moment and can not remember their names:-) |

hi Ted did your head need reskimming? Pammy |

The specialists its question are Tech-speed ( www.tech-speed.co.uk ) who are located at Eathorpe very close to you, and the MGF Centre in Wolverhampton. I can also recommend the Rugby Car Care Centre and Trinity at Hinckley. Its sound like you stopped ASAP so there shouldn't be any need for head skimming, as this is only sometimes required if the head gasket fails, which hopefully in your case it hasn't. |

I don't think you have HGF. Try getting the hose replaced and the system bled before you do anything else. Techspeed in Leamington are expert their number is 01926 632572 If you are near Rugby then Rugby Auto Care are also good. |

Pammy No we stopped in time so only the hose needed replacing BTW witnessed by at least 10 other MGF/TFs who were following me:-) And we were in the middle of no-where in Germany! |

Pammy Agree with above comments. The hose and expansion cap need replacement. Also the Anti freeze (check whether pink or green ~ they are different and it is VERY important to get the right one. Bleed the system after replacement of above mentioned parts and you should be fine. Supply chassis number of your car and i will confirm the correct anti freeze solution for you. HTH Tony H |

There is a garage on Stratford Road Warwick which has an MG Service Advert although I have not used it. Geoff F. |

Hi all Nice man at Techspeed (Gavin) sorted us out with a new hose. 3 peice jobbie now to replace original one peice blown up item. Plenty of knowledge. No hesitation in reccommending the co. Will fit and carefully bleed it this weekend. The car had yellowy green antifreeze when it exploded, I have bought a gallon of green ethylene glycol concentrated stuff. I think this will be alright, won't it?. Now what is the ratio water to antifreeze? Alan for Pammy |

There are some recent threads about antifreeze that might be worth your reading. |
