MG MGF Technical - hot bakelite smell

When driving my F, specially with the hood down there is a distinct smell which resambles hot bakelite. What might that be?

Thanks, Bas

At a very rough guess maybe the distribuator cap ?

I had a similar sort of smell a couple of years back and it transpired it was gearbox/transmission oil escaping via a blown oil seal on the right hand shaft and then being blown onto the hot exhaust.

Fairly quick and easy job to replace and as BTW the early *F*s had a weak seal now changed for a stronger type.

MMMMM Bakelite…now that brings back memories!

I have a similar problem caused by a leaking gasket on the bottom of the oil filler remote pipe. When the engine gets hos, a small amount of oil heats up and gives that sort of smell. varies with the type of oil used! Just have not got round to fixing it yet as it is only a tiny dribble.

I'm going to have to look for some oil leaks as well then.

I also get the smell after a bit of top-down driving and it seemed to me to be more reminiscent of hot wiring - that smell you get when the coating starts getting hot after a short circuit maybe. I think, on balance, I would rather take the oil leak.

Thanks for the input. I will check for oil leaks tomorrow.
