MG MGF Technical - How bad does a K-series have to write it off?

Hi all

Don't worry - the dead K is not mine!

Friend with K-powered landrover. HGF. Non-specialist mechanic has stripped engine and says that:

* The cylinder liners are moving freely
* They've damaged the head
* the head has already been skimmed and canot be skimmed further

He's recommmended buying a new engine rather than trying to rescue this one, and quoted £3500 for the new engine alone.

1) Is it worth trying to repair the old one?
2) If not, is £3.5k right for a new 1.8K?
3) Anyone got a used 1.8K to sell?

If the answers are no, yes, no, then I think he's going to just give in and send the landy to the scrapyard, which strikes me as a pity. They're not *supposed* to die!

1) Probably not, although probably possible with enough patience. Sounds like they kept driving when the temp was cooking, if so it's also possible that they have melted the oil pick-up and injection moulded it into the oilways.

2) Yes, although I have seen a number floating around as surplus stock for cheaper (not recently, but I'm not looking)

3) Plenty of used ones for prices from £500 to £700.

I think Rimmer Brothers have new 160s advertised at £1750 including VAT.
No good for a Freelander, I think.

Can't see eBay at work, annoyingly - the firewall blocks it. As he's the head of IT, though, I guess he'll be able to get around this in some cunning way ;-)

My freind runs a landrover garage and spares
we are based in east yorkshire, andy has loads of spares from a bulb to a full car, im sure he can do you a deal on an engine he can arrange delivery as well takes credit cards aetc etc etc
