MG MGF Technical - Hydragas spheres ( Rob ?? )

If your there Rob. Remember I was intending to replace the spheres, well the time has come and I would like to know how or indeed can you remove the aluminium piston. As you probably know my existing ones are machined down so I need to swap.
S Laithwaite

I'm sure Dieter will correct me if I am wrong - but they are an interference fit: they should just drop out. :o)

For confirmation, you could drop Roy @ TS a line - but I don't think that it is rocket science to remove :o)

Good luck
Rob Bell

You have two options as they are pushed into the rubber diaphragm.

1 Pump the sphere up until it pops out.

2 Use an air line with low pressure as I did.

S Laithwaite

Yep, that's the way to go :)

*g* how did you get it back in then ?

Another one on the matter.
Has anyone out there found a solution to keep second hand parts free from rusting away inside ?
Just pooring oil inside can't be right cause of chemical reaction with the rubber.
Dieter K.

To get the cones back in simply inflate the sphere with the pump or low air pressure. Once inflated place the cone on the inflated rubber and keep hand pressure on the cone whilst allowing the sphere to deflate. It is a good idea to put some French chalk around the area where the rubber makes contact with the alloy cone. It took me ages to find a bike shop who still had French chalk.

With regards to preventing the rusting of the metal sphere I would suggest rubber grease smeared over the metal. This shouldn't cause a problem with the rubber.

Castrol do this but I don't have a part code for it, however it does exist.

Great work Stephen :o)

How's the rebuild commencing? Sounds as though you've nearly completed all the work?
Rob Bell

The rebuild is a little slower than usual owing to the fact that we only have on average 3 hours each evening. However as I probably mentioned the new engine is mated to the gear box and has been fitted to the subframe. Victoria has been an angel and supplied loads of bits and pieces. I haven't had the head of my old engine but will take pics for you all when I do.

I like yourself replaced the clutch on the new engine not that it really needed it. New thermostat with a hole drilled thru it and of course engine mountings replaced.

Hopefully either tonight or tomorrow night it goes back in.

The last plug for mgf center. I really could
not of afforded this without the help of Victoria and Bill so once again I recommend them for just about anything to do with a mgf.
