MG MGF Technical - IACV replacement

Does anyone know where I can buy a new IACV. Also a guide of the price would be good.
Cleaning this valve cures my problem tickover but it soon returns.
Nik

Give Rimmer Bros a call, 01522 563 344. They have most MG stuff

Or just as at your local Xpart garage

Describe your symptoms, you'll proebly find the IACV is not at fault, but there is somthing else. The Lotus boys are always blaming the IACV, but here it hardly ever gets a mention... make your own mind up!

If the IACV is doing things you don't expect it to it is probebly because the ECU is telling it to do them, the IACV is not autonomous.

What's an IACV ??
Mike Howlett

Idle air control valve.

Basicly a bypass for the throttle to keep the revs up when under choke conditions _and_ it opens when the throttle is pressed at all to provide 'soft landing' which is where the ECU makes enough air to burn any petrol left over when you suddenly release the throttle

Give Victoria a ring, I picked one up of her last week.

It will be a lot cheaper

>How do you actually clean the IACV Valve out exacttly???

The typical solution to undo the hoses and spray thru with carb cleaner when the car is running. Carb cleaner is nasty stuff and you would be better removing it and soaking the internals in WD40 then blowing thru with compressed air.

Will - Running an Emerald ECU. Sometimes the tickover settles perfectly, and sometimes the revs drop to 400ish before climbing back to around 900. Obviously dropping to 400 means that it sometimes cuts out. Fitted a new lamda and checked for any air leaks. Cleaned the IACV by removeing it and polishing, and cleaned out the throttle body. This did the trick for a few weeks but the problem is back again. Any thoughts will be appreciated as this has been a problem for 12 months now. Rob Bell indicated that if cleaning the IACV worked, the problem would soon return and a replacement was then the way forward.
Nik

I don't know a huge amount about the emerald - does it have a 'soft landing' feature? if so is it checked?
Apparently a lot of problems can be traced to the TPS, they don't like getting wet, however people assume a warped throttle body and replace the unit wholesale (which includes the TPS and the problem goes away - so it must have been warped right?). So I would start by hooking up to a laptop and running the throttle slowly thru the range to check for any dead spots especially around the landing area, and check for a smooth throttle cable too, if 99% of the time it doesn't allow full release it might be upsetting the emerald when it goes the full way

Is the IACV different between the MPI and the VVC because of the different type of inlet manifold???
Chris Glen

Hey Will you don't seem too busy in China!!!
Anyway could this be caused by the left thermionic triode valve??
I'am lovin it!!
Bob (robert) I am turning? yes I once owned an MGWasp!!

>Anyway could this be caused by the left thermionic triode valve??

unless there is some emerald ECU made by hifi buffs because they get a "cleaner"* sound from the engine when they don't use transistors - I doubt it, sorry Bob

Busy, but diffrent hours to you lot, and not a lot to do in the evenings

* Cleaner as in when it distorts hard it distorts in a more pleasurable way, rather than cleaner meaning that what you put in comes out just bigger, which is what I call an amplifier

Oh, I just found a real reason why you might want you ECU to be run with thermonic valves rather than IC's...

Thermonic Valves are more resilient to EMP than IC's, so come the nuculear war, the only cars still running will be those built with carbs, or with injection controlled by thermonic valves. Apparently the russians were quite hot on the old thermonic valves for battlefield apps.

See, 5am and you've already learned the new thing you were going to learn today - might as well have the rest of the day off ;-)
