MG MGF Technical - Idle speed and modified computer

Having (sort of) solved a problem I was having with a sticking throttle (new throttle body), I am still seeing some slighly strange idle behaviour with my 1996 1.8i MGF. Cold starting, the car starts, but the idle speed is so slow it stalls. The idle speed seems to vary from '0' - '800' once warmed up - is this a feature ???
According to my garage I have a modified computer (previous owner stuff I guess) that may be causing some odd behaviour. Can anyone give me some tips ??
Thanks

Funny, what could that be ?
Chip tuned ?
How does the MEMS ECU look ?

Problem can be each and everything... I assume due to the cars age on a problem with the oxygen sensor.
The archives contend a test written by Carl on how to measure the oxygen sensor independant of the ECU.

I would start searching the failure with ignition system, Distributor cap, plugs and leads and then air inlet temperature sensor and as mentioned the oxygen sensor.

This might be usefule regarding connections

Have you reset the throttle position sensor?

The work was done by a garage :-) - the throttle position sensor sounds like an easy one to check though (famous last words) - how do I do that.
I looked at the throttle cable (which was replaced when the body was replaced)- that seemed to be a bit 'stiff' to me - after playing with it I got better (but not perfect) throttle behaviour - am leaving it to cool down for a couple of hours and then will try it again.

TPS reset or better said stepper motor reset ?
Anyway,
- ignition key to position on (don't start the engine)
- key the accelerator pegal 5 times
- ignition key out
That's it.

Then start as usual.

Thanks for all the advise to date. However, returning from my NYE party yesterday I had a return of the throttle opening up and the idle speed increasing while in neutral.... the car is going back to the garage next week.....does this mean that the throttle body diagnosis was probably wrong?
