MG MGF Technical - If the coolant isn't bled properly - how long before HGF
Quick question for you techies. If the coolant system wasn't properly bled through, how long would it be befre the HGF. Would be almost immediate. Cheers
Dez
Yes/no- who knows? The lightlyhood is that it would cause localized overheating almost immediatly, but this overheating might clear itself up leaving you with a weekened HG which might break later. Will

Will is right, who could predict? It all depends on whether trapped air causes an airlock, or is able to travel harmlessly out into the expansion tank via the Joggle-valve whose purpose is precisely this: to extract unwanted air. In any case, HGF would not be an immediate consequence (assuming a fatal airlock)- this could take many months/ miles before showing up. :o(

Hi Dez, agree on all above, especially what Rob mentioned about the jiggle valve. IMO many HGF´s comes from the fact that this valve doesnt work as intended. "Farthing" (sp?) from the firerings is not uncommon on the K-engine and those gasses has to escape somewhere ! Who has that fine information on his site how to free that valve ? Saw it some time ago but has forgotten where it was.... Anyway, useful info as well as the one given by Jon , Norway about re-filling via that hose to be sure that it is opend up and free . Would also like to make an adversitement for the re-build of the cooling system as by Simon . My own re-build is kindly hosted on Dieters Tech Site. I guess no old "F" outside warranty should be without that modification :) Regards , Carl. |

I'm having the radiator changed in my TF... long story. What is the actual 'bleeding' proceedure? Do MGR describe it or is it a proceedure enthusiasts have developed? How can I make sure (check) it's been done? Any cautions / things to watch for? Ta

Yes, I'd like to know the 'bleeding' procedure. I believe there are four nipples?? Any links to any sites showing how to do this. Would I have to take off the back shelf to gain access to the engine, (I can never seem to manage it). I'm sure if someone wrote a book on maintenance, they'd make millions !!!
Derren
Hi Derren, there are four nipples. There's a summary of the procedure on my site, but this is a subject more comprehensively covered by Dieter - see http://www.mgfcar.de/bleed/index.htm Ian, I'm not sure what the actual bleeding procedure is (maybe Dr Dave can answer this for us?) The information in the above linked site is how enthusiasts have approached the problem, and IIRC, includes information on how to ensure that the Jiggle valve is operating properly (authored by Roger Parker I think). Hope this helps :o)
