MG MGF Technical - Instrument pack wiring...

Anyone know whether non-Jap Mk1 MGFs have the warning lamps for the seat belt and catalyst overheat wired in (but unused)? The wires concerned are black/red and black/yellow respectively (IIRC).

Andrew, do you happen to have a picture of the wiring loom for the instrument pack? Your site has the instrument pack itself, but no wiring?

Why do I want to know? Oh, a couple of project ideas ;o) ;o) Okay - one's for the electric water pump project (it would be useful to know that the circuit is working correctly without having to listen out for the pump).

Cheers
Rob Bell

Did both mods 3 years ago. On mgf cabling already there except for connections to bulbs/exhaust/Jap setbelt fitting. You will need to manually alter the pcb in the instrument panel.

Rob,

Instrument side ? or fusepanel side of the harness ?
Dieter K.

Julian - I should have remembered that! So all the cables are there? Including, for the catalyst over heat indicator, the cable to the fuseable link?

Dieter, I am particularly interested in the wiring to the instrument pack, but also if the wires are there on the 'other side' of the fuse pack, then that would be a real boon :o)
Rob Bell

>Dieter, I am particularly interested in the wiring to the instrument pack,

Keep patient. Will have a look if I find the time... and the harness. No Instrument in _stock_ though.
Dieter K.

Okay, thanks. When I get my car back (currently up at Techspeed having its service and a couple of other little jobs done), I'll have a look as well...

Are you just looking for an indicator lamp - or somthing more cunning?
Will Munns

Will, nothing more cunning than an indicator lamp (for the EWP at least). Thinking about it, the MFU will be 'dead' after ignition off, so there may be no particular advantage to using cat over-heat wiring loom to report it's activation...
Rob Bell

You will find the cabble to the Cat to the engine comparment buried close to the rear engine bulkhead with , from memory, a brown connector. You need a Jap cat plus sensor -cost from memory about £400 in total. For the seatbelt buckle (£40) you need the Jap buckle and again the cable is already there in the tunnel (black connector). The real problem is to the fuse box and instrument panel. You will need a Jap instument panel loom (£30)and the alteration I made (as Rover were unable to give me the part number and not on fiche) was to the small PCB on which the central warning lights are mounted. Get yourself the wiring diagram and study closely as impossible for me to remember how I did the mod for the seat indicator bulb but there is a spare space for it on the PCB but I had to alter one of the pcb tracks. Regarding the cat overheat bulb (£1) there is a hole and you just screw in the bulb in the instrument panel. The seat belt indicator bulb (£1) you will need to solder into the PCB - a right bugger to do and get right but got there in the end. Best of luck and it is nice to see ALL the lights light up on start up - boy's toy I'm afraid!!!
Julian

Julian, you're a star! :o)

Good news for me in part. Julian, because I am not planning on reinstating the cat over heat warning lamp, but plan to use it as an electric water pump on indicator after ignition off, I'll need to bypass the MFU.

A little more worrying is what you are saying regarding the instrument PCB. Do I need a Japanese spec PCB to get the cat over heat bulb to work - or is the PCB primarily for the seat belt warning?
Rob Bell

Rover could not give me the part number for the Jap PCB. I even checked back to the factory. If anyone knows the part number please tell me and I'll replace my al;tered uk one.

The PCB is to mount the seatbelt warning light only. You will not need it for the CAT light which screws into an available hole in the instrument panel. I am trying to recall where exactly the pre installed cat cable ends up in the drivers footwell - I forget whether I found it already in place connected to the fuse box in the driver's footwell or close by.

Regarding the engine compartment, you will find the other end close up the rear bulkhead close to the middle and close to the main ecu. You will be able to reach for it from the grilled access hatch.

Julian

I'm about to remove my Jap Cat off my F. I'll look out for the part number for you and post it on this forum.

Yeeks, Julian on board !!

Err... I just had a search on my site, cause I remember, there was anything with Julian and Jap spec some years ago ;)

OK this _was_ some years ago :))
2001, to be precise.

Rob, check the image on top left.

Good news is that I've got my car back - complete with working EWP that switches on after the ignition's switched off (thanks very much Will - it's working a treat :o) )

Next step will be to wire the cat over heat circuit to the motor live - and bypass the MFU (not necessary)

Julian, thanks very much for the info - it's invaluable. Will have a look tomorrow in the engine bay to see if I can identify the wire in question in the engine bay :o)

Dieter, great pictures. I think that I can see the black/red wire - but not the black/yellow? I believe what Julian says: it's there, but probably the wire orientation is a little off, hiding the yellow tracer?
Rob Bell

Erm... odd... I didn't spend too long looking at wires outside today, as it was snowing! But it looks as though there is a brown/black cable - but it is going to the MEMS. This is clearly not the one I'm looking for. Julian, any other clues as to where to look?
Rob Bell

Rob

I'll have a look tomorrow to remind myself where the cat sensor joins the loom in the engine compartment.

Julian
Julian

Thanks Julian, that is much appreciated :o)
Rob Bell

Rob
It is right beneath the Main ECU, underneath it (ie Offside and close to offside suspension strut). You should be able to feel for it with the engine access grill off.

Julian

Brilliant, thanks Julian. I'll go and have another look for it :o) Car is currently burried under a pile of snow at the moment, so this will probably be another job for the weekend! LOL
