MG MGF Technical - Interesting tyre query

I have an MGF which is nice.

However,I have a slow puncture on the driver's side rear wheel.

On the rear wheels I have Avon ZV1's. Now, I have just come back from the local tyre emporium who tell me that no, they don't stock Avons but it doesn't matter anyhow because any old 205/50 VR15 tyre will do.

Thing is - and I might have got this completely about face - but I thought that there was some kind of edict from Rover stating that mixing tyres on the driven wheels is a bit of a no-no.

So, what to do?

Insist on a new Avon, or bung on another make of tyre.

On the subject of ZV1s the bloke at the garage tells me that they are terrible for wear. Anyone confirm this?

And another thing - after some suspension fettling earlier this year I can't remember where exactly I've put the locking wheel nut key type thing. I can't remember seeing it since the car came back from the aforementioned fettling.

So, if I haven't got the key how the dickens can the wheel be removed?

You can get a new key from rover, just remove the cover and note the letter stamped on the nut, then simply go to rover and get a new locking key for a tenner.

Mixing tyres is a no no, don't mix, especially comming up to the time of year when you need the tyres the most.

Soft tyres = high grip as they go gooy and stick like glue, but they also wear faster. Choose your poison high tyre prices or high crash repair bills.

Don't mix tyres - doing so is a recipe for diaster. If you've got Avon ZV1s, then insist on replacement ZV1s. Ideally, you'll want them on the front too - but if the handling at the moment is okay, then clearly there is no rush.

As Will says, the locking wheel nuts are available from your Rover spares department. :o)

"just remove the cover and note the letter stamped on the nut". There go the rose-coloured spectacles. I thought codes were only available from the original dealer.

Radio codes, immobalizer codes, yes,

locking wheelnuts, no :-(

Absolutely as above. I put Avon ZV1's on the rear they are really good. The front tyres were ok at that time. Later when it came to replace the fronts I could not get ZV1's and fitted ZV3's instead although a slightly different pattern both are good in the wet, a pre-requisite since I live in Scotland. I would have preferred ZV1's but they were not available at the time, would have had to order, this was a friday and wanted to drive from Chorley to Scotland and the fronmts were, to say the least showing a little canvas, not good at 1** mph up the M6.

Aa to the wear? Put the ZV1's on at 60000 miles on the 9th April and have done 11000 miles since then and look good still for a few more i am guessing i'll get around 15000 miles or a little more out of them. Maybe not the hardest wearing but they grip like the proverbial
