MG MGF Technical - Interior Lights/Bootl Alar,

I know a lot of people have had this one, but I've got a new take on it.

My alarm goes off if I open the boot.

The mirror interior lights stay on when I alarm the car. (although the footwell lights go out). The car won't double lock when it's in this mood.

The mirror and footwell lights stay on sometimes while I'm driving.

Given the footwell lights normally turn off when I alarm it (even when the mirror lights stay on), I'm figuring its more of an ECU issue than door switches.

Any ideas?

I'm no expert, but it sounds like a wiring issue. Perhaps a bad earth somewhere in the alarm wiring circuit.

I'm sure more info will follow shortly.

I tend to go with Sam - more likely to be door locks / wiring / alarm than ECU per se.

Have you checked the regulars, especially the Y joint in the loom near the left rear boot hinge? Peel back the outer and check very carefully for broken wires - they are not always easy to spot.

I'll put ten of Sam's groats on a wiring fault.

My car doesn't seem to have the second locking facility, I keep pressing the lock button, even aiming the remote at ny head but it doesn't second lock.

Any ideas?

Thanks John and Sam, I've stripped back some of the wires on the LHS and found one with some strands damaged but not fully broken through - I'll cut this one back, just in case. Still not sure why the boot being 'open' causes the interior lights to come on (or indeed why the mirror lights stay on when I lock the car, but the footwell ones go out. Or why all the interior lights are on when I'm driving, sometimes....

Lets not even start on HGF, leaking airvents, or the cracking noises from the blind welds on the cross-member - all of which I've had and mostly sorted via this Bulletin Board! No more help needed on these, thank god.

The interior lights are on the same fuse/circuit as the boot-light, so this is shorting to one of the +ve wires in the loom so lighting all the interior lights, including when the boot-open sensor is released. Lucky it hasn't blown the relevant fuse (the radio stops working then).

Graham.

Thats right Graham - I lost the radio 5 times on a holiday in France before my brain clicked in and I checked the boot loom.
