MG MGF Technical - ITG airbox inline with the TB

Hi All,
I thought Id just nip out earlier and fit the VHS cross brace above the engine bay/ just below the inspection hatch on my MY 2000 F.
To my surprise, i found my ITG airbox was so high on its mounting plate that it has rubbed paint off the underside of the rear deck and there is no way the cross brace would fit! and the airbox is miles away from lining up with the Throttle Body! is this common?
So a quickie turned into...
A, Remove ECU!
B, disconnect Airbox and strip out, offer up the empty shell, inline with TB and mark new mounting holes positions on the mounting plate.(I decided to move the mounting plate, not the airboxes position on the plate, if you see what i mean)
C, Note one bolt head fouls the fuel filter and mounting bracket, (Bum :-()
D, Remove fuel filter bracket and dremmel away the "web" inbetween the mountings captive nuts.
E, Dremmel away the plastic flange from the fuel filter housing inbetween the bolt hole,
F, Finally offer up the mounting plate + airbox and once happy its inline with the TB and low enough for the brace to be fitted, drill the 2 new bolt holes in the plate.
G, Remake the airbox and refit in new position.
H, realise that there was no need to strip the airbox down, and that the bolt that fouled the fuel filter bracket could have been removed, or the airbox spaced 1/2 an inch further towards the TB!

The repositioning has had a better than expected results, in that the car seems to pick up noticably quicker from low down, and the top end when tested on our local curcuit (M4, sssh!)has increased to over 135!
Hope this is helpfull

Better pick-up from low speed is possibly because you are now getting a colder air feed into the engine.

If you want to avoid any chance of picking up water spray, a common mod is to run a 75-80mm hose, preferably smooth bore, from your airbox to the LH side vent.

John, I've thought about the VHS bracing, but just never got round to it. How does the position of my ITG airbox compare to your's?

David Clelland

Hi David,
Yours looks like mine does now after tinkering!
I wonder if Beach hill fitted a front wheel drive one by mistake??? and mine hasnt got the sticker!
I Know the TF mounting plate is different to the F mounting plate, so it could be a early F plate that dosent leave room for the brace.
It obviously takes the braces into account as they are standard on the TF.

OK, Ive ordered the TF mounting plate to see if thats a better position/fit? but im not sure the available mounting points will be in the same place.

PS, Sorry, that last post made no sence at all did it!!!
Off for remedial endlish lesson!

Ta Chris,
I was going to get some sexy samco hoses from merlin for the box to TB anyway.
But, which is best?
Straight coupling, hump hose or the charge air cooler type?
And is there a benifit to moving the airbox closer to the TB?
Thanks again
John

It's possible that there are two versions of the ITG airbox - one redesigned after the introduction of the TF with its mounting brackets fitted...? It's possible that's why David' fits differently to yours John.
Rob Bell

Hi Rob,
Yes their is 2 versions, i checked at Merlin motorsport,

aparently only one of the bolt holes was elongated,to lower the airbox.
But the TF one they sent me bares no resemblence to the one on the car at the moment, the mounting bolt holes are to far apart to start with, maybe the TF has a different fuel filter housing bracket? or somthing else is used to bolt to.
Might just give up and add it to the massive list i want techspeed to sort out, once my creadit card is back in reentry,
(after having these 280 kits made, and projector lenses, and stainless steel tie bar washers, and stainless steel anti rollbar clamps made, and new solid mounts,Its worn abit thin!)
BUT i did fit VHS 20mm lowered seat base!
Its bloody brilliant, wish id bought it years ago instead of those silly springs that fire you into the roof at every pot hole!!!
Happy weekend
john

You've sold me on the lowered seat base now! Did you buy it directly from VHS?

TF uses quite a different airbox, and thus the support bracket is different! So no surprise there then... But why is David's ITG so different to yours I wonder?
Rob Bell

My ITG was second hand when I bought it. Remember that my car is a 2001 model and I think that it has the same OEM air box as the TF. Anyway the plate that was on the ITG lined up with the back hole on the air box bracket and I just used one of those strips of metal with all the holes in it (don't know what it's called) to attach the plate to the front hole on the bracket. The ITG lined up perfectly with the TB and I had no problems taking the cold air feed to the left side air vent. I think that I must have an ITG for a Mark I MGF, but I've been running it for about 5 years now without any problems. I can even remove the filter for cleaning and oiling without taking the ITG air box off.

The TF version of the Maxogen doesn't just have a different bracket, it has a different hose between the TB and airbox too.

With the F version the hose is straight (as shown in David's pic. The TF version however comes with a kinked 'S' shaped Samco style silicone hose.

I've had both F and TF version over the years and found the neither of the brackets fitted and I had to elongate the holes on both.

The airbox still sits very close to the brace mounting bolt with the TF version.

Not the best pic, but hopefully you can see the difference with the hose.

Thanks all for your posts,

For the high cost of the ITG Maxogen system i have to admit im a bit miffed with the crappy fit, but tests do show its still the most effective airbox! i wonder if its fitted like this for the tests?

Even with the TF bracket as Mr White pic shows, it will clear the brace now, but sits quite far back from the TB centre line and requires the S bend pipe!
So Ive put my original one with elongated holes back on, as its low enough for the brace and almost in a straight line with the TB.

Thanks again,

Oh, yes Rob they posted me one and I dropped mine off with them while i was in their neck of the woods sorting out the 280mm brake discs, its a fab mod

Anyway off to fit the projectors as theyve finally arrived from china!!!
