MG MGF Technical - Jumping out of 5th gear

I have 2004 TF135. When in 5th gear the gear lever touches the plastic ring holding the lever gaitor in place. This occasionally causes it to drop out of engagement under acceleration. I have tried adjusting the centre console to give more space, but there is not enough adjustment. Is it possible to adjust the linkage from the lever to the box, to bring the lever more upright.

Jonathan.

I don't think this is adjustable, it sounds odd.

Check under the car to make sure this bracket is the right shape still:

Sounds to me as if one of the cables has broken at some stage and the replacement has not been fitted correctly.

The cable that transmits fore and aft movement is the one that usually breaks first. The other cable transmits the sideways movement.

The position of the gear lever can be adjusted by detaching the ball joints on the end of the cables and screwing on or off a couple of turns. You need to keep the cable length constant by screwing one end further on nd the other off by the same amount. When properly adjusted the gear lever should be upright and equidistant from the edges of the hole.

The bracket that is shown in the link is for a F not a TF so the shape will be different. As Chris has suggested some adjustment will probably sort the problem.

Chris, cable is as originally fitted to the car, only just got round to trying to sorting it!!!!
Are the cables under the car or inside the car under the console. Sounds like I need to adjust the fore and aft cable only???

Thanks Jonathan

Cables run under the centre console through a "transmission tunnel" then emerge through the engine bulkhead in front of the gearbox. Access is limited at the lever end, but should be possible.

There are loads of pictures on Dieter's website, http://www.mgfcar.de/ , taken when he replaced the cables on his F, describing how to gain access. To keep the same overall cable length you must adjust both ends of the cable. If you do one end only you could end up with a bend which leads to failure - Mike S is an expert on this subject.
