MG MGF Technical - K&N Filter

Well, finally took advice from this BBS and got K&N fitted. It is true what a lot of people said - you spend most of your time "accelerating" just to hear that wonderful noise! Speaking of the noise, it rained today and I had to have hood up :-( a rare event! The K&N sounds completely different this way! Is it normal to hear a quick "whooshing" noise immediately before the "roar"? Also, regarding the air intake hoses - which way should they "point" i.e. forward facing, downwards, or rearwards? For some strange reason (?) the garage has fitted mine sort of pointing to the rear! Surely this can't be effective for air intake? Any advice on this? Thanks. Off for a topless blast now as the sun is out again :-))

Air intakes should be pointed forward, so the cold air gets blown into the pipes and then to the filter.

I don't know what you mean by a whooshing sound, mine does only the roar.

Happy motoring,

I think i know what you are refering to.

Does the noise occur when you first begin to push on the accelerator?? I've noticed a few cars with K&Ns make a noise when the accelerator is first pushed.

If it is like a sucking sound then yes, this is normal.

Pipes should point forwards where they can scoop up as much air as possible. Inside the engine compartment the pipes should be 4" away fromt he filter, point at it. This stops any water (from a puddle say) getting to the filter.

Thanks for your replies, guys. I will have to try and point the air intakes forward! And move them away from the filter (almost touching it!). Would have been easier to do it myself in the first place!! It seems they have curved the pipes that way and fastened them with cable ties. Anybody have any pictures of how to do it properly? Seems so little space underneath compared to working under my Landy!
The very short "sucking" sound occurs just as you floor the throttle before the "roar" takes place. So this is normal - good, nothing to worry about then!

yep whooshing all normal, the pipes should be approx 4" from filter, Dave.
