MG MGF Technical - Leaking Boot

Has anyone else had problems with water getting into the boot? I took my Mgf 2 the dealer last week and they said i had some grommits missing which they replaced but just washed the car and another puddle in the corner of the boot. I cant see where its getting in.

Also i took the carpet out 2 look and noticed the back panel of the boot which faces the engine has lots of holes cut into the panel which are coverd by some sort of tape, am i being stupid or is this normal?

Cheers

try the archive, search for 'leak' or 'boot leak' and you should get several hits.

I had this problem a couple of weeks ago,i had water getting in from the High Level brake light. From what i gather from the dealer, when the boot lid was manufactured in some cases the spot weld would go right through and leave a hole for the water to get in. Take the brake light out if you have one or the plastic insert and look through from the other side of the boot lid. When i did this you could see daylight through the holes. I then applied silicon sealent. So far so good !

Check out the condition of the rear light cluster seals - early cars' seals are a few mm thinner than the latest variants - see http://www.mgcars.org.uk/cgi-bin/gen5?runprog=mgoc&p=emg/000901.htm

Worked a treat on my car :o)

If it happens withe car parked facing uphill its the rear light seals. If it happens with the car facing downhill its caused by gravity allowing water to trickle down the rear bulkhead. Check the archives for more info and respective solutions

Ahh, the old 14A7090A grommets (4 of) in the old FAQ :)
Relates sometimes to case 'downhill' parking.

The holes you saw in the backpanel are no problem, but at some cars the upper seam was a problem with seals and mastix application.
