MG MGF Technical - Leaky roof!

My ‘new to me’ 1996 MGF is a little bit leaky around the windows – slight gap between the window and the rubbers on the hood.

Is this a curable problem?

Does it mean a new roof or new rubbers ?

Any ideas on cost?

Curable - yes.

Masses on this in the archives and FAQs - in fact all you will need to know plus a lot more.

Very common from what i can gather.Ihad exactly the same problem when i got mine, 2 months ago, i replaced the seals on the hinged part of the hood and also round the windscreen and doors ( the latter is all one peice and has been re designed since alot of leaks accur on that age MGF) its also a case of taking the interior door cards out and adjusting the windows so they fit snugly into the seals. Read up on the archives, its pretty straight forward.
A little bit of advice, as i had problems when i got mine, check the brackets on the bottom of both seats for rust, a give away sign that a lot of water has been getting in. With the old seals, alot of water runs down the side of the door and streams out under the speaker soaking the carpet. Pull the seal up that is around the sill and slide your hand under the carpet, the underlay was soaking and ruined in my case, had to remove both seats and pull up the carpet to change the sponge that is under there. It only takes one night of heavy rain and windows that aren't adjusted properly to soak the carpet to this extent. It wont have caused any long term damage as all the floorpan is painted and sealed and the water appears to be a bigger problem then it actually is.Just dry the floor and stick the carpet in front of the fire to dry, the sponge however will need to be replaced.Hope this helps.

sorry didnt mention prices. Windscreen seal were around 40 quid and the hinged roof seals around 60. can be fitted yourself quite easily. try adjusting windows first as you might not need to buy the seals. May as well do the whole job properly in one go rather than adjust the windows then have to replace the seals 6 months later.

MB--- just out of curiosity, have you notice the carpet or under it being wet or not?
