MG MGF Technical - Light knocking around rear parcel shelf
On my TF 160 I have a weird sort of light and low knocking sound coming from somewhere behind my head, around or underneath the parcel shelf. It is audible only at very very low speed, coming to a halt or moving off (or crawling in trafic at walking pace). It is audible both with and without the hardtop so it doesn't seem to have anything to do with that. I wonder if it could be the boot hinges/springs or the suspensions? Given that the subframes are attached to the chassis without any bushes on the TF, I wonder if this tends to make suspension noises more audible...?? Anyone else experienced this? Any comments are warmly welcomed! Oh yes, I have SP1 on my car. Per |

Could it be the (disconnected) electrical connector for the exhaust flap rattling against the wing...??? (Oh...except your TF is presumably a LHD and so that item would be behind yr passenger's head....) |

Nope, that one is secured between the solenoid and the side panel. Besides, that thing would rattle. My noise is more like a slight knocking (a bit like the "glou-glou-glou..." type noise you get when emptying a big water bottle quickly... :-) Per |

Per...You haven't got a big water bottle in the boot, have you??? ;-D |

>>My noise is more like a slight knocking (a bit like the "glou-glou-glou..." type noise you get when emptying a big water bottle quickly... :-)<< Are you hearing the noise of coolant moving round and into the expansion tank Per? I've never known for that to be audible inside the car though. |

Rob, I don't think it's the coolant since that sound would probably not be audible through the parcel shelf sound deadening mat (I think...). I currently suspect the boot springs/hinges, since the sound is very similar to what I hear from those spring/hinges when I slowly open and/or close the boot. I will spray some WD 40 on them to see if it makes any difference. Per |

As usual, I will illustrate my point thanks to Dieter's website... ;-). Here is the part I suspect: http://www.mgfcar.de/boot_lid/hinge_dcp_2683.jpg Per |

WD40 may be too-light an oil, Per. Maybe some grease might do the trick? |
Rob Bell |
In fact WD40 will disolve the grease currently there. |

Will, If there ever had been any grease on this hinge, you can be sure that the guy on the line who put it there would have been fired for wasting valuable MG Rover assets, despite the strict instructions from management not to do any quality control... Per (in cynical mode...) ;-) |

Could be a rear sub frame bolt that is loose. This is what happened on mine. Characteristics - only heard it at low speed. Especially when accelerating hard. Sounded like a hard knocking and jolting - really annoying. |
