MG MGF Technical - Look what's happened to my exhaust!

Well, I found the source of my rattle/blowing SP exhaust...see http://homepage.ntlworld.com/tim.jenner/p996kvx.htm#split_tailpipe

The entire right hand tailpipe has broken off and is hanging by a piece no more than 2mm wide! Has anyone else ever had this happen?

Tim.

This may be a bit mercenary but if you replace the exhaust can I please have the hanger, that shown in your pictures held on byone bold.

I don't mean to be unsympathetic
but mine is broken and they can't be bought individually!
Steve Ratledge

Steve,

Vulture! ;) I will definitely replace the exhaust, but I am going to try to weld the tailpipe back on because a friend is after an SP exhaust as well. If I don't manage it (which is more than likely, given my skill with a MIG welder) then you're welcome to the bracket!

Boohooo !
So that's been the reason for recent noises.

Tim, how much miles did you with it ? How old ?
More details appreciated.
The last of your four pics shows a big outwards dent aswell.

Regards
Dieter <<< -- having sensitive spot on the own SP now ;)
Dieter K.

Dieter,

I will check the invoice when I get home tonight (the previous owner fitted it). The question now is how best to fix it! I can:

a) Fit my spare standard exhaust (good temporary measure, but a bit quiet...);
b) Try to weld the tailpipe back on the SP and refit;
c) Buy a new SP;
d) Buy a different exhaust!

What's the collective suggestion?

Cheers,
Tim.

I've got the same bolt broken.

Erik

Couldn't someone else onwing an SP show up with your broken exhaust and his invoice ?

Yeah I know.... it's not really by the book, but.....
Erik

My exhaust has done 30,000 miles and is 5 years (and 2 days!) old. :(

Erik - funny you should mention that...I actually have the original invoice, I'm not sure what would stop me pretending to be the original owner! Failing that, does anyone have a roughly 5 year old SP and would like to earn themselves some beer? :)

>SP exhausts are guaranteed for life...

Errrm, with my usual sarcasm I'd say:
It's live has come to an end. So no more guarantee ... ;)

30k is the app. mileage of my SP. I think mine was made 1997.
The same big dent at the bottom RH, but no broken bolt.

Tim, put a rolled strip of sheet metal inside between the broken halfs and re-weld. Some weld dots while it's installed. Then get it off and weld the circumference finally.
Dieter K.

I will try to put on the spare exhaust tomorrow and have a go at fixing the SP. Dieter, you say "put a rolled strip of sheet metal inside between the broken halfs" - why inside rather than wrapped around the outside of the fracture (like a bandage)???

Cheers,
Tim.

PS. Had a look at my spare exhaust - same broken bolt!!!
Tim Jenner

Hurrah! Fixed! :) Took it to an exhaust place and they managed to weld the tailpipe back on with the exhaust still fitted to the car. £47 well spent! :)

Ahhhh It's about quality not ...well anything else really!

My Trevor Taylors are over 5 years old, have done over 30,000 miles and are in pristine sheeney shiney Stainless Steel condition.

You see! such a green person. Pollutes the air through lack of a Cat, Pollutes the environment with noise, and it doesnt even have the grace to decompose gracefully. I should beat myself.

Trev said to me when he fitted them that at the end of Human civilisation, after the Apocalypse there will be a big pile of what is left of humanity and sticking out of the top will be those damn pipes!
Neil

I have to say I'm not at all impressed with the build quality of the SP - I'd hope the new ones are better. Still, at least I didn't have to put the standard one back on! :)

Good to hear that the exhaust is now fixed Tim :o)
