MG MGF Technical - Loud screeching noise from air intake

I was stuck in some slow moving traffic last night & suddenly a loud "screeching" noise started. I stoppped & turned the car off & it appeared to be coming from the driver side air intake vent. After 2-3 mins, the noise stopped & I carried on - no problems today. Is this a potential problem with the fan that cools the engine? Looked like same sort of area?

Thanks for any advice

Mark.

Mark,

My 1.8i suffers from the same problem when sitting in traffic in hot weather (30 plus deg C) It is definitely the fan but I am not sure what the problem is. I asked the same question here months ago and got answers like "leaves and twigs in intake" ... As it only happens when hot then its not leaves...I suspect that the fan becomes more flexible when hot and is touching its cowling or something along that line.

Fan belt needs replacing.
Two types, regular and longer one if Air con fitted.

The fan in the intake at the rear does not cool the engine - it cools the engine compartment. The engine cooling fan is at the fron with the radiator as standard.

The fan costs approx 2p and is rubbish and fails about as often as the case cooling fan in a PC.

I'm sure it is controlled by a temp sensor somewhere but no idea where. That may be failing, the wires may be failing, the connections may be dirty, the fan may be failing.

Cannot help as I'm not 'electrical' but somebody will as soon as they get to work.

The engine bay fan is controlled by a temp sensor near the right hand boot hinge. The trigger temp is lower in an MPi than a VVC and you rarely get this fan switching on in a VVC. In the current weather I think you'd be hard pressed to get the fan on in an MPi too. This fan does run after the engine is switched off (unlike the radiator fan at the front of the car.)

The MPi engine bay fan will come on regularly - especially when doing a lot of 'in-town' motoring and over the last almost eight years I would say that the fan has come on on just about every outing the car has had, and I should point out this is our only car so it is used all year round.

Also to disagree with JohnP I have never had a problem with this fan and it appears to be as substantial as any other automobile fan.

The screeching could be as simple as a 'foreign body' in the works - it is falling leaves time after all.
