MG MGF Technical - Lubricating hood hinges

Does anyone know what to use to lubricate the hood hinges? WD40? Some other light oil? Some sort of grease?

Thanks,
Tim.
Tim Jenner

Tim,

I di them regularly with WD40, this works fine however i'm sure there must be a better solution!

Sorry I can't be more informative!
Rob Copeland

WD40 is surely too light a grade? Some form of spray-grease would be better?

I'm trying to solve the annoying squeek coming from my central bar (the one that sounds like dolphin song!). The hinges are quite close, I'm not sure grease would penetrate enough without disassembly? I have a nasty feeling that WD40 would work well for a week or two and then stop!
Tim Jenner

?? the very thin (before drying) silicone electrical grease ??

?? the normal white automotive spray grease ??

?? penetrating oil rather than WD40 ?? may get a bit further in.

Motorcycle spray chain lube. Penetrating, water resistant and lasts forever! Perfect for all kinds of linkages but not suitable for wires because it becomes very sticky.

I thought of suggesting chain lube as I have 7 cans in the shed but thought it might spread onto the hood itself.

Probably a graphite spray would be as good as anything - very fine, gets into gaps, doesn't damage hood material.
JohnP

3-in-1 multipurpose oil would work best in my opinion. Its a very light oil which will give good penetration, but will not dry out like WD40.

Motorcycle chain lube comes out of the can very thin and thickens up on contact when the air gets at it. Im sure this would work ok, but it can be very messy and you would have to work the hinges quickly before it goes thick in order to get good penetration.

Have fun.

The workshop manual of the F (and of the TF) specify a lubricant called Rocol Ultralube. Only trouble is that this lubricant has been discontinued by Rocol... Dohh...

The company says that a suitable alternative in their new range is Rocol Saphire Precision Lube Spray but, of course, this alternative has not been endorsed by MG Rover...

Oops... I'm making a fool of myself again... I thought we were talking about the boot hinges. I'll get my coat...

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Since there doesn't seem to be a general "right" answer I think I'll try 3 in 1 dribbled down a screwdriver blade first off (since I already have some in the garage)...I'll report back on effectiveness! :)

Cheers,
Tim.
Tim Jenner

That'd probably still be suitable Per :o)

Tim, okay - as I have '3 in 1' in the garage too, I'll wait to hear how you find the results. My hood has more squeaks than a litter of rats... :o(
Rob Bell

Tell me about it. :( And once I've solved the squeek I can start to attack the rattle under the dash!! :)
Tim Jenner

I use engine oil...for the door hinges that is...but you must do it !
Neil

Try sewing machine oil, it's very thin and won't go sticky or thicken. Your other half may even have some.

3-in-1 worked for me.

Tim,

If you find out what the rattle under the dash is, could you please drop me a line. I was going to go hunting myself for this as it is madening...! When the weather picked up.

My hood does not rattle but I do have a rubbing sound as if the layers of fabric that make up the roof have come appart and are rubbing of each other...! If anybody has a cure for this can they let me know.!

Thanks, Andrew.

Andrew,

I think my dash rattles are loose cables - I intend to have a rummage when the weather improves!

Tim.

I have 2 rattles
one at 3000rpm rightbehind my right ear ...probably hood mechanism or those clamps that hold the hood down atthe back infuriating

the other is behind the passenger's seat at tick over when warm

Thing sounds like a real shed!
Neil

Neil ,
Have you clipped the poppers together that are dangling from just above the rear window ? they can rattle on windstops, boxer hoops etc. also the flappy end of the zipper should be afixed to the velcro strip provided , another source of rattles.

Used a drop of 3 in 1 on each of the hood hinges this morning, it's now a lot lighter to lift and raise! Can't tell if the squeek has gone yet though - roof down weather today! :)

Cheers,
Tim.
Tim Jenner

Doh! Weather has turned and the squeek is still there! :( Guess I'll have to look a bit harder for the source.
Tim Jenner

My squeaks have gone - I've fitted the hard top. Now they've been replaced by the hardtop rattling on the catches. Oh the joys of MG ownership ;o) LOL
