MG MGF Technical - Manual fan - worth bothering with ?

Hi,

I have a friend who services/upgrades Japanese import 'Max Power' type cars and he has suggested to me that I add an additional fan to one of the air intakes to keep the engine cool during hot weather and heavy useage, (ie. to avoid HGF). This fan would be manually operated by myself from a switch on the console.

Has anyone heard of this and if so, would it work.

I've seen his car and he seems to know what he is talking about. Anyone seen 'Fast and the Furious'. His car looks like an extra from that movie.

Cheers

Derren,

I think it would be extremely difficult to fit a fan on the LH intake because the air induction system is in the way. There is already a fan on the RH side which operates automatically when the temperature of the engine compartment gets high.

I don't think a fan to blow cool air around the engine will prevent HGF. It will prevent heat damage to engine compartment components such as wiring, alternator etc. The temperature of the actual engine is controlled by the coolant and this in turn is controlled by the radiator at the front. You could perhaps fit an extra fan at the front. There is room for two fans at the front unless you already have two. (Aircon fitted models).

Thanks for the feedback.

Is the idea of fitting fans near the radiator worth contemplating. Will it make much difference or am I just best 'leaving it alone'.

Most HGF and engine troubles seem to be during hot weather so I'm trying to keep 'her' cool as posible. Plus, if it ever does blow, I can't afford the expensive repairs.

Derren,
The extra fan at the front is probebly not worth looking into, read up on Carls modifications to see why this option is not a good one and potentially a very bad one!
If you want to cool the engine at speed look at dieters webpage www.mgfcar.de for side scoop extentions (esentially a couple of pieces of clear perspex to make the "airflow neural" F airscoops into real airscoops. Also the MR2 type scoop to take air from under the car and blow it into the engine. Both of these mods are alledged to reduce engine bay temps by abot 10 degrees (IIRC) which is about what the TF bays are reduced by in the new design. Note however that this will only cool the engine at speed- but then you wouldn't be thrashing it if you were stuch in a jam would you?

As Will said other have found little benefit in better cooling via the radiator with the standard hose setup.

Unless you are prepared to replumb your cooling circuit like Carl, IMO the best you can do is ensure that the temperature sensors for operating the fans work properly. They have been known to cause overheating problems when stuck in traffic.

You might want to take a look at http://www.daviescraig.com.au/ - their Electric Water Pump booster (EBP) looks interesting; especially for those times when the car stops after a high speed run (ie when hitting a traffic jam, or returning to the pits).
Demon Tweeks offer it in the UK.
