MG MGF Technical - Maybe Misfire
As a newbie I have been looking through the website for the latest problem I have and haven't come up with much. I have had the car for a year with the usual problems front to rear heater pipes going, radiator blown and now a new one. Driving to work I noticed that at around 2500 rev in any gear the engine would make a shuddering feeling. I didn't loose power but could accelerate out of it. As soon as just over 3000rpm it would dissapear. Any clues? One other thing has anybody got any ideas of getting under the bonnet with a broken cable? tried looking underneath I can see the catch with the cable on it but I cannot move it with a screwdriver. Thanks in advanced for any help |

Hello,my 2001 1.8vvc is doing a very similar thing to yours,i decided today to treat the car to some new spark plugs and HT leads but when i got home i found the HT lead box only contained two off leads with built in coils i guess i will have to buy two more,i will let you know if it cures the stuttering problem when the engine is under load. |

This is a well known problem and 9 times out of 10 new HT leads cure it. I've just fitted new leads to my 2001 MGF and as Paul says it only needs two leads as the coil packs sit on top of the other two plugs. Just watch that you don't get too thick leads as they won't fit in the plastic clips. I got 8mm dia Magnacor ones and it's a very tight fit. |

Has anybody got a idea about the bonnet problem. For security reasons (as I have read) please email me with the solution |

I'm afraid I bottled out of trying to open my stuck bonnet myself, and took it to the then MGR dealer. It had been getting harder and harder to release the catch and eventually the cable gave up. Net result 165 lighter, but 4 years later it still works a treat! |

ouch!! Iam going to try this weekend, see if i can budge it.... |

If you know somebody with bona fides on the MGCC F register the painful formula can be divulged to a member but never to an open request for the security of the rest of us. |

I am registered on here, I have enclosed registration numbers etc. I cannot imagine its going to be to hard.I have looked underneath I can see the catch with the cable. If anybody did want to get in the alarm would go off. Whats in there worth any value? a wheel brace and jack, water bottle. I am sure if I looked hard enough on google the answer would be there. |

Alao a battery which powers your alarm. |

Ady The catch becomes easier to release if you get someone to sit on the front of the bonnet. I think you have worked out the rest of the procedure already. Chris |

Well bonnet sorted in just under 3.5 minutes. I couldn't do it the way I hoped as I didn't have anybody around to help. I will say this though you can do it through the drivers side. Fortunatly for me I knew I would be replacing the cable as the end in the boot had fraid and wouldn't last to much longer. I am pleased and releaved that it is sorted. After investigation the bonnet catch hadn't jammed and was quite free of rust. Looking into it a bit further I came to realise that the cable had popped out of some of the holders under the carpet which caused a kink and stopped the cable running freely. So for anybody out there check your cable run before tearing your hair out. |
