MG MGF Technical - Medium Wave Reception
Further to the recent thread in this section on poor reception on medium wave stations I decided to test my radio/tape out for myself. The reception was appalling. So bad in fact that I decided to trace the interference. I resurrected my little old 'tranny' (transistor radio to you young'uns) and tuned in to the medium wave in the middle of the band. I chose a quiet frequency where there were no stations. Then went out to the car. As I approached the car I could hear the interference level rising and once inside the car it was awful. This is without the engine running! With the engine running it was worse. Moving the tranny around the car made a small difference but it seemed worse by the centre console where the radio/tape unit is situated. So no wonder the medium wave reception is so bad. Just out of interest.. Bruce

Sorry, Forgot to say that I presume the interference is coming from the Alarm ECU

You should know by now that an MGF is no place for a transsexual.

Have just read this and the earlier thread in the archive which I must have missed. My 96vvc suffers the same apalling reception on both LW and MW on the original standard radio supplied. I asked the dealer to have a go at improving it while it was still under a guarantee (bought it used from them a few yaers ago) and they made very little improvement. Just wonder if the standard radio has a trimming capacitor which was referred to in the archive. My old LW/MW radio I had 30 years ago in my mini had one then but I can't see one on this model. Does anyone know if there is one and if so, where it is? Nick

Probably doesn't help much, but MW reception is fine in my '98 F. Admittedly, it's through a Nakamichi head unit, though the old MG tape unit was fine too. Not sure how I'd cope without 5 live throughout the football season! Darren.

My unit is non standard too because the car came with a Japaneese Rover radio which had only VHF up to 88mhz. So the only British programme I could get was Radio 2. Replaced the jap radio with a Panasonic... no trimming capacitor.. well, none mentioned in the manual anyway. Bruce

| I had very poor reception with the OEM set too. I changed to a £45 Matsui single slot cd player and analogue radio. This improved things a little, but then I put high performance HT leads in. this has made a huge diference, although I still get a small amount of intereference when the engine is running.
