MG MGF Technical - Metal clinging noise

Guys,

When accelerating hard I can hear like a metal clinging noise coming from the right handside of the car engine bay). Any idea as to what this could be?

Thanks

Stephane

have you recently got married? ;-)

Radiator/oil filler inspection flap - flapping about on the engine top grill?

Depending on your definintion of R/H side...

If it is fairly quiet, like an intermittant 'ting' type noise, could be the tail end of the rear screen zip banging against the hood frame. Use the velcro on the end of the zipper to 'stick' it to the hood by the side of the rear screen.

Right handside when standing behind the boot of the car and looking at the car.
Should have phrased this better, actually sounds like a metallic whistle, like if something was loose. Checked the boot, not skelettons there, so is defo coming from the engine bay.
Any ideas? Ta

Rear brake pads worn out so that the "springs" are touching the disks? (there are sprung bits of metal on each end of the pads...)

The bottom one does it first: they don't wear evenly!

Or a worn wheel bearing ?
How much kilometers or miles is it ?

OK, that rules out my guess - the tail of the hood zip is on the left hand side using the above description.

In the engine bay on this side of the car is:

Coolant expansion tank
Cam belt and flywheel etc.
Oil filler and dipstick
Engine bay fan
Alternator

Also

The engine block is offset to the right hand side of the engine bay (to make room for the gearbox and petrol tank on the left). So the majority of the sump/block/head etc is also in this area.

Plus, other mechanical components here include:

1 rear wheel,
Hub and bearing etc,
Brake disc and caliper,
Hydragas Sphere,
Shock absorber,
Assorted suspension componentry (wishbone etc),
½ drive shaft.

Lastly,

1 exhaust tailpipe,
½ of the rear silencer box
½ of the exhaust heat shield

So, there is quite a lot to choose from...

Thanks a lot for all this info. Car is only 9000km. Not a major issue (hopefully) but I will need to follow-up.

I have had a similar problem on my car for the last 18 months. When I accelerate I get a whistling/shrieking noise from the rear RH side. It appears to come from the exhaust. It occurs at >4000rpm with max throttle but if I back off on the throttle slightly, to decrease the acceleration, it ceases. MGR Dealer just shrugged and said he didn't hear anything on the road test. Still, it doesn't seem to be doing any harm and I have put it down to a defective baffle in the exhaust. One day I will borrow my son's rattle detector which is a series of microphones which can be fitted in different places around the car body and engine to detect just such noises. The control box allows you to switch from one mike to another.

I've got something similar ... happened just after I had the exhaust downpipe replaced. Sounds like 'a metallic whistling' noise. 72K service due soon will get it checked then.

Have exactly the same on a Trophy (6000 miles) from behind the drivers seat area. Happens at around 3000 - 3500 RPM but only when moving, not when revved when car stationary. Can't find out what it is either.

Hey guys its nothing to worry about just the exhaust valve limiter. They fitted these in batches and some batches were a different spec to others but they all do the same job.

Mine turned out to be the heatshield ...

This sounds rather similar to what I have been experiencing on my TF160. The best way I could describe it is sounding like a VW beetle when accelerating through the 3,000 to 3,250 rpm mark.

My dealer has already replaced the exhaust (back section) and the problem is stil there. No apparent problems with regards to engine power etc. But I'm certainly not going to put up with a sports car that sounds like a VW beetle when I accelerate! :(

Ok ... the dealer lied ... the noise is still there and it does still sound like a VW beetle accelerating.

Think I'll contact Mike S directly.

Bruce,

A rattle detector.... your son could make his fortune amongst the MGF community... :0)

If you get to the bottom of the problem I'd very much like to know. My car is booked in again for this next week so I'll let you know if anything positive happens.
