MG MGF Technical - MGF Coil Springs

Does anyone know if a Hydro to Coil Spring conversion has ever been done on an MG-F. I'm less than happy with the hydro set-up on my car. Its really not suitable for what passes for roads out here in Aus.

M.G. Arundell

Trade it in for a TF would probably be most cost effective. :-)

Having driven both on roads here, which are on a par with yours, or maybe a bit rougher in places, the TFs suspension can be quite choppy compared to the F.

PS. I am amazed at the prices for Fs in your part of the world. A 97 F, with 40-50K on the clock, from Japan in NZ would be around $15,000ish. I have seen adverts for similar cars in Brisbane for $A25,000ish.
Neil Courtney

Neil,

Thanks for your imput. Had thought of that but there are a couple of things that go against that course........
I can't stand the look of the TF. (Hate the name too........) LOL
My F is basically a weekend car, its not something I use daily so its not a high milage car BUT because its a 98 model the value against a TF is zero. MG-Rover in Aus does not have a good name for retained values.
As much as I love my f and MGs I vowed never to spend my hard earned on another MG-Rover product after the buying and owning expirience with this car. EG. One month after taking delivery MG-Rover dropped $10K off the new price. No refund to me of course! Two months out of the 24 month warranty but with only 10,000km on the clock the head gasket goes. MG-rover not interested. The official response "Car not serviced properly". Even though at 10,000km it hod only required one service and this was done by the selling dealer...... So NO WAY am I spending my hard earned on another MG Rover product........
You're right about the cost of MGFs in Oz as opposed to what you guys in NZ pay. Mind you that applies to pretty much all cars. The fact that you have access to cheap second hand cars ex Japan is what keeps your prices down. Access to these vehicles is serverely restricted here.

I love our F now. We've tailored it to our personal taste. Have played around with the engine (did this during the rebuild caused by the head gasket failure), the interior has been donen over in full leather and we've tickled the suspension. As far as a sports car goes I think it is a very competant machine and as a long time MG owner will keep it for years. Just don't ask me to buy another MG Rover product until they fix up their back up. Maybe under Chinese ownership something will happen. They could certainly learn a thing or two from Rangerover.........

I would stick with an F on bumpy or rough roads - our TF135 on standard suspension is wonderful on the smooth stuff but much less compliant when it comes to the bumps, I just find myself slowing down to save my bonce hitting the roof!!
Tony

Murray, there are several upgrades that can be made to the standard F to improve the ride, changing it to TF suspension isn't one of them (IMO). I would look at better shocks and invest in a hydrogas pump as a starter. Bearing in mind that your roads are probably more suited to 4x4's and trucks then the F or TF ain't gonna cope that well.
Cheers Mike.

I have fitted lowering knuckles and AVO adjsutable shocks to my 97 F, and have found this to be a good compromise on comfort and handling, not to mention the improved looks.
Karl Woodhead

I've went the same way as Karl, but rember to reinforce the turrets at the rear. After a day at our local race track a large improvment in handling and stability at speed was noticed plus my lap times were lower.

See MG F Chamber of Horrors link.

Andrew, when are you going to come racing with us rather than just sprinting?

Regards...David

David. I don't think I could pass the medical for a level 3 licence. never mind the cost for the approved roll cage, tyres, electrical cut outs, full harness belts plus a proper race suit.
Now if I loose weight get fit and save a few more dollars.............
Andrew Regens

Andrew

1. < $1000
2. < $1000
3. < $150
4. < $250
5, < $1000 for helmet, suit etc

Licence < $500

Can't see the problem really.

Regards....david

PS You would be competitive with the rest of us in your car.........and have lots of fun! Much better than sprinting.
d mottram

"just sprinting ".....

Think I will report abuse to the BBS manager ;O)

/ Carl.
Carl Blom

I'd love to go racing too, but I'd probably have to get another car to do that. I think that I'll just keep with the sprinting for the time being ;o)

"Just sprinting" indeed David! ROFL! ;o) ;o) ;o)
Rob Bell

I must be stupid or I have missed something here or "just sprinting " perhaps has another meaning which escapes me. Here down under we have an event call a "sprint" which involves a series of timed laps of a race course. One is competing against the clock rather than racing bumper to bumper against another opponent. It is rather like hitting a tennis ball against a brick wall rather than across a net!
Regards and no offence....I hope.........David
d mottram

I think it was a joke... but I'm not sure what it means (I've lead a sheltered life).
Kes

Sorry David, just a lowly Sprinter teasing the seasoned racer ;o)

No offence ;o) LOL
Rob Bell

Rob,
As you would see from the photo I sent you a while ago, it's not bumper to bumper at our sprints just very close !.
The white F is Davids.
Andrew
Andrew Regens

Andrew,

I would love a copy of the pic that you mention if it shows our two Fs competing. Who was driving mine? Was it earlier this year at the sprints or at the last Sandown when Patrick was aboard. It is a bit of a worry really.........he is suggesting that I am getting too old to race and that he should take over the family sponsored race seat. I ahve told him that if he can beat my time then he can race instead of me in the white F and I will buy something quicker.

Regards to all and certainly my "just Sprinting" was in no way meant to demean that form of motor sport although I did like my analogy with tennis!

It's okay David - I honestly didn't think you were! :o) Hence the use of plenty of winking emoticons ;o)
Rob Bell

Rob said it all,it was ment as a joke. For me (formerly racing in Roadsport C) sprinting is the motorsport I can cope with after some illness and age...
It is yourself, the car the track and that against the clock ! No excuses or blames on anyone else if you fail and the same glorious feeling if there sometime is sucsess !
BR, Carl.
Carl Blom

David. You are safe ,it wasn't you or your son driving and I was leading due to being the first car out on the track. The times don't lie( the photo was very flattering ) I was way down the list.
You won't have to give up your seat just yet!.
